Knowledge Assignment: End-of-Life Care

Life and death has a natural course. Thankfully, healthcare workers like nurses are to be trained at aiding a patient and their families overcome such. This is where end of life care comes. By engaging in open and empathetic discussions, the nurse may assist the family in the anticipated death and ensure the patient’s comfort and wishes are upheld (Tveit Sekse et al., 2017). In this regard, I will discuss the following practices to EL’s daughter in regards to her mother’s end of life care.

First on the discussion is to introduce what is end of life care and debrief the family about death and the natural course of life. The stigma that surrounds the subject of death and dying

may be lessened. Moreover, discussing this to the sick individual and their family about death may make them feel less anxious and can help guarantee that their last decisions for care are respected (Keeley, 2017).

Next, it is crucial to emphasize to E.'s daughter how vital it is to customize her care plan to suit her particular requirements, preferences, and objectives. Despite E.'s incapacity to vocally communicate, developing a therapeutic connection and monitoring her behavior can aid in understanding her goals and values. This approach ensures that choices about her care reflect E.'s personality and improves her general wellbeing (Midtbust et al., 2022)

In relation to that, comfort and management of symptoms will be discussed. It is critical to emphasize to her daughter how crucial it is to put E.'s comfort first. It is crucial to express that the treatment plan will focus on addressing both physical and psychological issues in order to alleviate symptoms including pain, anxiety, shortness of breath, and agitation. The key goal of this plan is to ensure that E. receives the best care and support possible while boosting her quality of life throughout this stage (Schwellnus et al., 2021).

Fourth is the discussion on the course of dementia and where E. is at. It's crucial to stress that artificial nutrition and hydration could not be advantageous owing to diminished hunger and limited efficacy, and to outline the prognosis (Cohen et al., 2018). Instead, give an option on providing comfort-oriented care and take into account alternate methods of hydration, such as the use of moisturizing mouthwashes, subcutaneous hydration (hydration beneath the skin), giving little sips of liquids, and delivering ice chips or popsicles (Baillie et al., 2018).

Last is to promote conversations on advance care planning, emphasizing the value of living wills and healthcare proxies as examples of advance directives. This also includes
