Nursing Philosophy
Jasmine Mojica West Coast University NURS 497 Professor Stephenson
Nursing Philosophy The topic of and practice of nursing has become so complex in the sense that it is now viewed as more of a specialty according to the particular unit you work on. With that being said, no matter what nursing route one chooses to pursue there is one aspect that always remains consistent, promoting the health and well-being of our patients. Health is a crucial part of nursing as health and illness are two states of being that go hand in hand with one another. Health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (World Health Organization (WHO), 2023). This represents an accurate definition as there are various components that must come together to represent a complete state of overall good health. For example, an individual who is physically healthy but suffers from mental health issues such as depression is a poor representation of health as there is still an underlying issue that must be addressed and treated. This is why nursing is very individualized and our plans of care must be tailored specifically to each patient as everyone’s overall health varies from person to person.
As a future nurse I strive to provide quality patient care by utilizing evidence-based research and practice as well as incorporating the specific needs and preferences of my patients. As nurses we must be compassionate and considerate of our patients wishes in regards to their health and care needs. This is known as autonomy which is the right to self-determination based on educational information provided the nurses and other healthcare professionals. Autonomy also relates to only providing nursing care within the scope of practice defined by state and organizational rules. Examples of autonomy in nursing include administering PRN medications or assigning nursing duties based on levels of competence (American Nurses Association, 2023). In addition, I value of high importance establishing good patient rapport as this is the first step in
