Week 4: Nursing Philosophy West Coast University Professor Quowonda Ford-Brown
My reason for being a nurse stems from my mother who is a nurse. She talks so passionately about the work she does and how rewarding she feels when being able to provide comfort in mother’s who are giving birth. Nursing is important to me because not only would I like to provide quality care for my patients, but I would also like to take this knowledge and be able to utilize with family and friends as well. As a nursing student, I already feel like this education has helped me with knowing about conditions my parents have and being able to educate them from what I learned in school. Florence Nightingale’s philosophy has inspired my philosophy. She discusses that the nurse must use her brain, heart, and hands to create healing environments to care for the patient’s body, mind, and spirit (Riegel, 2021). As a nurse, some people think it’s important to be book smart, but if your heart isn’t in it then you’re not providing quality care for your patients. My philosophy that I want to live by as a nurse, is to treat my patients as if they were my family and not just another life. Health is an important topic. In my life, health is a top priority. As a student who sees many patients going into hospitals being admitted for certain things that can be preventable. It makes me realize that we need to be more focused on doing little things to improve our health such as making time for exercise, eating better, and staying away from things we know can be bad for us (cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, candy, etc.). The quality and quantity of life a person can live is based on their health and how they maintain it. Critical thinking and clinical judgment have been a weakness for me. It is important as nurses to improve this skill set because it allows you to analyze data based on knowledge you receive from your patient. Nursing is all about putting the pieces together and figuring out the root causes of the reason we are helping this patient. It allows us to find the best nursing
