After completing self-assessment 5-1, my scores were the following: 17 : personal appeal 11 : exchange 20 : consultation 14 : ingratiation 15 : inspiration 10 : legitimate tactics 12 : rational persuasion 6 : pressure 9 : coalition building My highest score was in consultation. I believe to be a good leader it is important to seek advice and include your team members. By doing this, this gives every member a voice and allows them to all feel heard and included. This will strengthen the team and team work. My next highest score is in personal appeal. This tactic refers to friendship and loyalty while making a request. While friendship isn’t always necessary in the work environment, respect is. Typically, when you have the respect of your team members you will also gain their loyalty. Respect others and be loyal to them, and they will more than likely return those qualities back. Inspiration tactics are important for everyone. Building up your team, encouraging them will aid in supporting them to push to do their best. Everyone likes to be inspired and encouraged. It is highly effective. Ingratiation tactics emphasize on getting someone in a good mood prior to making a request. It includes being friendly, helpful, and using praise or flattery. This tactic along with the exchange tactic, which is a tactic that suggests making express or implied promises and trading favors can go hand in hand. This can be both effective and ineffective in leadership. However, it always helps being on someones good side. For example, you need to switch days at work, A will switch you days, so when A needs to trade days you need to return the favor back. Otherwise, you’ll be the one-person people don’t want to help. Rational persuasion is a tactic used to try and convince someone with a valid reason, rational logic or realistic facts. It’s always important to have valid reasoning, logical reasoning, and factual information if you are leading others and persuading/influencing them. Legitimate tactics suggest that basing a request on one’s authority or right, organizational rules or policies, or express or implied support from superiors is best. Even as a leader, you still have a superior. Including them, and consulting with them can help achieve goals. All of the above tactics are tactics that I believe a good leader would use to help their organization and team be the very best they can be. My lower scores are in tactics that I don’t believe are tactics to use as a leader. Coalition tactics refer to a tactic that prescribes getting others to support your effort to persuade someone. This tactic I don’t believe is one that should be used nor would I use it as a leader. One, I don’t believe you should have to persuade anyone to do anything. And you should never try to get support from others to support your efforts in persuading people. Pressure tactics are tactics that focuses on demanding compliance or using intimidation or threats. In order to be a good leader, you can’t pressure your team members. You can’t intimidate or threaten someone and expect them to trust you and/or in you and your skills. It makes for a very hostile work environment.
