Tony Dmytrijuk Dr. Houghton Bcor 370 Due Dec 7 Self Leadership Book Review Before one can effectively lead others, one must first learn to lead themselves. Self Leadership: The Definitive Guide to Personal Excellence, written by Drs. Jefferey Houghton, Christopher Neck, and Charles Manz, defines self leadership as the strategies, both outwardly in the world, and inwardly, in thought, individuals employ, to influence their own actions and decisions toward achieving their goals. It puts forth not only strategies for self leadership, but applications of self leadership in the real world, and profiles famous leaders to exemplify how each concept looks when applied correctly. Having applied some of the concepts from the text into my own life, I can confirm that they do indeed work, because I have been more productive, more motivated and more disciplined towards achieving my goals. Self Leadership: The Definitive Guide to Personal Excellence begins with an introduction to the concept of self leadership, and some basic context, as well as important theories, on which the strategies to follow are based. Sources of leadership and leading oneself are mentioned in the first chapter. Chapter two covers the context around self leadership. Two important self leadership theories are mentioned, self regulation theory, and social cognitive theory. Self- regulation theory describes behavior as being on a spectrum, similar to a thermostat, meaning that a person regulates their behavior, maintaining their behavior between two opposite extremes. Social-cognitive theory states that human behavior stems from the triadic reciprocal model of behavior and from self efficacy. The triadic reciprocal model of behavior refers to how external

factors influence us and how we influence ourselves and others with our own behaviors. Three focal points of self leadership are discussed in the following chapters, including behavior, natural reward, and constructive thinking. The behavioral approach to self leadership focuses on understanding one’s behaviors in the context of goal completion. Some behaviors contribute to task completion, and some behaviors detract from it. Furthermore, outside factors tend to influence our behavior, but we also can impose behavioral checks for ourselves. Goal setting, reflection, and the use of reminders and positive cues are all examples of self-imposed behavior focused strategies for self leadership. Natural reward-focused self leadership strategies involve finding within one’s work “an element of fun,” as said by Julie Andrews in her movie, Mary Poppins. Natural rewards are the enjoyable parts of a task that are either inherent to the task or built into the task artificially. Either way, these strategies tend to boost performance, efficiency, and worker satisfaction in work settings. They also tend to give people a feeling of competence, as they enjoy their task more, and so they feel they are better at it. Something as simple as a checklist is a natural reward strategy, as checking off completed steps and parts of a task feels good and helps people to stay motivated, as well. Natural rewards and external rewards can also be combined for greater effects, according to the text. Finally, constructive thought focused strategies of self leadership apply directly to one’s mental dialogue. Negative self-talk, a form of self-deprecating mental dialogue, is not only destructive for self esteem, but also causes poor performance and lowers productivity. Disciplining oneself to use positive self-talk, instead, can be quite beneficial for many people. Also, one’s outlook affects their ability to reach their goals. Obstacle thinking, an outlook that focuses on the challenges and problems ahead of a person is, ironically, an obstacle itself. Using

educated leader is a slow one, I find that I am less stressed, getting better grades, and in general I feel more satisfied with my own work and time management. Recently, I had a large project due in a different class, and I created a list of smaller goals, with the larger goal of completing the project. I found that after checking off each item, I felt a lot better about the project as a whole. Natural reward. I also made sure to take small breaks throughout and reward myself for working hard, setting timers each time to make sure I did not become too distracted. I am only beginning my self-leadership journey, but I am glad I started now and not later.
