DPM2 TASK 1: HISTORICAL & CULTURAL INFLUENCES ON BEST PRACTICE

Similarities and Differences-

One major difference was the age of each of the students in the videos; the first video was kindergarten students, second video was middle school students and the third was high school aged students.

A similarity in each was that the teachers broke the students in groups to have them work with each other

Each video was at a different setting and location. The first video was urban in California, the second video was a rural school in Washington and the third was an urban classroom in Illinois.

Historical Influence-

All three videos showed a lot of diversity, some more than others, such as the first and second videos. The first video had an Asian presence at 47% and the third video had 83% black students. The second video had cultural diversity but was predominantly white at 83% but still showcased students of different cultures and ethnicities learning with other students of different cultures and ethnicities. Starting in the 1950’s America started moving towards equality in schools. One of the key moments that changed history was 1954, Brown V. Board of Education which declared segregation in school unconstitutional.

This brought forth what we know today as the norm of having children of different cultures learning alongside other students.

High Leverage Practices-

In all three videos the teachers all used the same high-level practice of setting up group work. The first teacher had the students in video one break into small groups and write down facts about American symbols. The second teacher had each student write what they knew about a math question and then had them go into smaller groups to work on their math problems. She then pulled away students she wanted to work with independently into another group. The third teacher had her students work together and deliberate on different academic controversies.
