Setting (i., rural, urban, suburban)

Instructional topic or content of the lesson

Science: Students use their kidney beans, group discussion, and schema to define the word germinate.

Science: Students collected water samples from a local creek and tested the quality of the water sample.

Using Infographics to show the theory of change based on their chosen topic.

Technology use, including examples of how technology is used in the classroom

 Chalkboard  Whiteboards  Paper & Pencil  Poster

 Ipad  Pencil & Paper  Centrifuge tubes  Projector

 Laptop  Pencil & Paper  Projector

Each education level resided in an urban or suburban area. The middle school is in a suburban area, allowing them to use their nearby creek to collect water samples. Middle and high school classes use higher technology items such as the Ipad or Laptops

to assist in their class work. As opposed to the elementary school, which just used the chalkboard and personal whiteboards. Both the elementary and middle schools' topics were science related. The two use the evidence they have collected, whether it be using their kidney beans or water samples, to further their theory or hypothesis. Contrary to the topics they used in the high school class to complete their infographics.

With my observation of each classroom setting, I have determined the most significant historical/cultural/legal impact to be the Movement Toward Equality. Each class has a wide diversity of students. Historically The court case of Brown V. Board of Education (1954) and The Civil Rights Act of 1964. Kept students protected by banning segregation allowing all types of children to learn no matter the color of their skin. The elementary located in Queens, New York, with 27%, and the high school

in Oakland, California, with 83%, have a higher percentage of Hispanics than the elementary school in Olathe, Kansas, with

just 5% of Hispanics. The movement toward equality allows these students to get an education bettering themselves.

(Acrobatiq,2022)

In observations of the elementary class, the teacher used the high-level practice of setting up and managing small groups. She asked the students, "What do kidney beans need to successfully germinate?". Then had them use their schema, notes, and groups to decide what the definition of germinate was and answer the initial question. Then walked around the room, talking with each group and learning what each student within the group thought the definition of germinate was and how they got there. She and another teacher helped keep the students on topic and work toward their goals. The middle school classroom teacher used the high-level practice of Designing lessons and sequences of lessons. She created the lesson for collecting and testing water samples from the local creek. She used high-level practice to keep the students engaged by having them collect and analyze it on-site. "Like a real scientist. " She then has them bring water samples from home to examine them. Doing so allowed them to learn on a personal level. The high-level practice I observed in the high school classroom is explaining and modeling content. The lesson used infographics to show the theory of change based on their chosen topic. She modeled this content by creating an infographic and sharing it with her students. Using the infographic helped show the students what an infographic looks like, and having them grade it by utilizing a rubric. Once they were done grading, she began asking questions about which grades were given—talking over why it was given and how to improve them. Doing this helps the students understand and improve their work.
