Codine
Hydro-codone
Strong agonists
Morphine
Hydromorphone
Oxycodone
Meperidine
Agonist-antagonist
Also called a partial agonist or a mixed agonist
Binds to a pain receptor and causes a weaker pain response than a full agonist
oSometimes used in obstetric patients
oIncludes acetaminophen and nalbuphine
Antagonist
Binds to a pain receptor but does not reduce pain signals
Functions as a competitive antagonist because it competes with and reverse the effects
of agonist and agonist-antagonist drugs at their receptor sites
Opioids
Very strong pain relievers
Characterized by their mechanism of action
Abuse and addiction can occur
Adverse effects

diarrhea, and rash
