1. JOB IDENTIFICATION

Job Title: Dental Health Support Worker (Core, Nursery & School)

Responsible to: Co-ordinator - Oral Health Improvement

2. JOB PURPOSE

To deliver the Toothbrushing component of Childsmile and assist with Fluoride Varnishing within

designated Nurseries and Primary Schools in order to improve the dental health of children and reduce

health inequalities within this population group.

3. DIMENSIONS

The post holder is responsible to the Co-ordinator, Oral Health Improvement, and accountable to the Head

of Oral Health Improvement.

The post holder has no budgetary responsibilities.

The post holder has no managerial responsibilities but provides peer support to new or less experienced

Dental Health Support Workers

The post holder is employed within NHS Lothian and there may be a requirement to work flexibly across

Lothian to meet service demands

6. KEY RESULT AREAS

1. Liaise with school staff over mutually convenient timetables for visits to minimise disruption to the

school day.

2. Ensure consent requirements are met through collation of appropriate paperwork for

toothbrushing programmes as per National Childsmile manual.

3. Assist in the operation of the fluoride varnishing programme for example escorting children to and

from class for varnish applications, maintaining paperwork

4. Set up and maintain daily supervised practical toothbrushing activity for individuals and small

groups of nursery and school children as per national and local protocols

5. Ensure that the toothbrushing programme adheres to the stated NHS Lothian guidelines eg

infection control within educational establishments.

6. Visit establishments on a regular basis to replace supplies, offer support and practical advice.

Ensure that all relevant protocols are being always adhered to.

7. Work with school teaching staff to deliver basic oral health messages to children.

8. Maintain accurate registers throughout the school year and to maintain an up-to-date file of

consent forms and other associated paperwork.

9. Ensure sufficient stock to facilitate the efficient running of the programme.

10. Provide a professional link between education staff, parents and Oral Health Service staff.

11. The post holders is expected to adhere to local Health and Safety regulations and implement

National Childsmile Guidelines, proposing local changes within the department where appropriate.

12. Train all educational staff who participate in the toothbrushing programmes to the National NHS

Toothbrushing Standards annually, documenting successful completion appropriately.

13. Collect and collate toothbrushing data as required by the National Childsmile Executive Board

14. Actively participate in surveys and audits within the department as required, and also in any

national Childsmile research as required.

15. Adhere to all child protection guidance to support the GIRFEC provisions in the Children & Young

Peoples (Scotland) Act 2015 within the Oral Health Improvement department.

16. To support NHS Lothian’s values of quality, teamwork, care and compassion, dignity and respect

and openness, honesty, and responsibility through the application of appropriate behaviours and

attitudes.

7a. EQUIPMENT AND MACHINERY

The following are examples of equipment which will be used when undertaking the role.

• Desk top computer, laptop and printer

• Photocopier, scanner, shredder

• Telephone landline, mobile

• Lockable storage bag holding classified document & equipment

• Satellite Navigation system

• Childsmile national resources

Note: New equipment may be introduced as the organisation and technology develops, however training

will be provided.

7b. SYSTEMS

The following are examples of systems which will be used when undertaking the role:

• IT systems including Microsoft Office and Outlook

• HIC system for recording Childsmile activity (computer-based patient record management)

• TURAS, learnpro

• DATIX reporting

• R4 dental system for recording patient information

• E expenses

Note: New systems may be introduced as the organisation and technology develops, however training

will be provided.

8. ASSIGNMENT AND REVIEW OF WORK

Work will be assigned by the Co-ordinator as driven through the NHS Lothian Dental Action Plan Steering

Group, however, the postholder will have flexibility to plan workload with educational establishments in

their area.

On a day-to-day basis the Dental Health Support Worker will receive remote supervision from the Co-

ordinator.

Individual objectives, performance and associated Personal Development Planning (PDP) will be agreed

between the post holder and the Co-ordinator (Oral Health Improvement).

The post holder will work within the parameters set by the National Childsmile Board and NHS Lothian

Standard Operating Procedures.

Mental

Daily time management and prioritisation working within a n education setting undertaking independent

decision-making risk assessments e. most suitable place to carry out oral health checks

Concentration required when communicating, persuading and influencing staff, parents and children,

especially where English is not the main language spoken, to achieve positive oral health outcomes

Dealing with frequent interruptions that require the post holder to respond to requests for specific

information and focus on a different task or activity

Ensuring the consistency, authenticity, and clarity of all recorded information

Emotional

Frequent exposure to distressing situations within school setting e. visiting special needs’ schools

weekly, with potentially challenging behaviour

Dealing with the specific challenges of working closely with chaotic families to advise on oral health care.

Environmental

Frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions for example, foul smells, head lice, body fluids and

contaminated materials

Frequent travel to locations within NHS Lothian area.

13. KNOWLEDGE, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED TO DO THE JOB

Qualifications

Educated to SQA National 4 level or equivalent

Effective written and verbal communication skills.

IT Skills.

Ability to work with people and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Ability to show initiative and work without direct supervision on a daily basis.

Organisational and time management skills.

Childsmile qualification or expectation to complete National Childsmile qualification within 12 - week period

of time.
