4. Credits and Notional Learning Hours

‘Notional learning hours’ indicate the amount of learning time taken by the ‘average’ student to achieve the specified learning outcomes of the course unit or programme. This includes all learning relevant to achieving the learning outcomes, e., directed study, essential practical work, group work, private study, preparation and assessment. This module has 16 credits, requiring 160 notional learning hours from students.

5. Module Calendar

The module stretches over a 15 week period, during which the following programme will be followed: Week Month Dates Description 1 February 20 - 24 2 Lectures + No Practical Chapter 1 2 Feb/March 27 - 3 2 Lectures + 1 Practical Chapter 2 SQL Server Basics 3 March 6 - 10 2 Lectures + 1 Practical Chapter 3 4 March 13 - 17 2 Lectures + 1 Practical Chapter 5 5 March 20 - 24 1 Lecture + 1 Practical Public holiday: 21 March Chapter 5 UFS Recess : 28 March – 31 March 6 April 3 - 7 1 Lectures 1 st Module Test: 4 April Public holiday: 7 April Chapter 6 7 April 10 - 14 2 Lectures + 1 Practical Public holiday: 10 April Chapter 6 Chapter 7 8 April 17 - 21 2 Lectures + 1 Practical Chapter 7 9 April 24 - 28 2 Lectures+ 1 Practical Public holiday: 27 April University holiday: 28 April Chapter 8 10 May 1 - 5 2 Lectures + 1 Practical Public holiday: 1 May Chapter 8 11 May 8 - 12 1 Lecture 2 st Module Test: 9 May Practical Lectures: SQL & C# 12 May 15 - 19 2 Lectures + 1 Practical Practical Lectures: SQL & C# 13 May 22 - 26 2 Lectures + 1 Practical Aegrotat test: 25 May Practical Lectures: SQL & C# 14 May/June 29 - 2 2 Lectures + 1 Practical It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that he/she receives all the information in connection with this module provided during the lectures. Attendance of theory lectures are compulsory. Please note that only registered students will be allowed to attend the CSIS contact sessions. Please note the schedule (and the indicated content) is subject to change. Any changes to the schedule will be communicated via Blackboard

7 ASSESSMENT BREAKDOWN The CSIS2634 module mark will be determined based on your marks for assignments and two module tests: ASSESSMENT TYPE CONTRIBUTION TO SEMESTER MARK Test 1 Written 40% Test 2 Written 40% Assignments Practical 20% 7 AEGROTAT TEST The Aegrotat Assessment Policy of the Department of Computer Science and Informatics will be applied strictly. This policy is available on the Blackboard module website. Please note: - Should you qualify for the aegrotat test and but fail to show up at the specified date, time and place, no additional module assessments will be drawn up. - Participation in sport, cultural activities, the attendance of weddings, or transport problems etc. are not valid reasons for absence during module assessments and will not justify qualification for an aegrotat test. - No member of the Student Representative Council or House Committee may give you permission not to write a test or examination. - There will be only one aegrotat test, which will take place on 26 May. This assessment will cover all the work of the semester. 7 INCOMPLETE Failure to write/do any of the module assessments while not handing in a valid original or certified doctor certificate (within 48 hours after the assessment), will result in CSIS2634 being indicated as incomplete next to your student number. This implies that you will not be admitted to the final examination and that you will not be allowed to register for the module again (which could in effect mean the end of your studies at UFS). CSIS2634 will also be indicated as incomplete next to your student number in any of the following cases: - If you did not attend at least 80% of all lectures. - If you fail to submit any compulsory assignment.

  • If you fail to write both module tests (or the aegrotat test instead of one module test). 7 PROMOTION CSIS2634 is not a promotion module. 7 ASSIGNMENTS All assignments are compulsory. Late submissions will be penalised with 10% per calendar day, starting from the date and time of submission, for the first three calendar days. Thereafter, you will receive a zero for the practical or assignment. However, you must still submit a practical or assignment which meets all the stipulated requirements otherwise you will receive an incomplete for the module. If your practical or assignment is more than seven calendar days late, you will receive an incomplete. Your module will be marked incomplete if you do not complete all the assignments to the satisfaction of the lecturer. No co-operation whatsoever between students is allowed. You may only submit your own work. Students found guilty of any transgression in this regard will be severely punished. Action will also be taken against students who help or allow other students to copy their work. The only exception to this rule is when assignments are classified as group assignments. (Also refer to the Departmental Disciplinary Code on the Blackboard module website.) It is your own responsibility to keep backup copies of your assignments. Lost or corrupted computer files, network problems, etc., cannot be used as an excuse for late submissions. More detailed assignment information will be made available on Blackboard throughout the semester. It is each student’s responsibility to ensure that he/she takes note of all the information and aligns him/herself with the expectations. 7 CALCULATION OF THE FINAL MARK
  • In terms of the Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences rule book, the final mark of this module is calculated as follows (see example below): a) 50% of the module mark plus 50% of the examination mark; or 7 PASSING THE MODULE A student should obtain a final mark of 50% or more in order to pass this module. In addition, a sub-minimum examination mark of 40% is required.
