JANE EYRE

PART 1. A child at Gateshead Jane → 10 years old Her aunt is so cruel to her. John Reed bullies her. They had a fight. She is locked in the “Red room”, where her uncle died. She had no light, and she saw ghosts, so she became ill. The doctor offers to let her go to school. She quickly accepts it. Her aunt also agrees to get rid of her.

She discovers his father was a poor vicar and when he married her mother, the Reed family (de part de mare) were so angry that they disinherited her. Her parents both died of an illness a year after their wedding.

Mr Brocklehurst come to Gateshead house. Mrs Reed tells him how bad Jane behaves. When he leaves, Jane is angry with her aunt and says to her how much she hates her.

PART 2. A girl at Lowood A coach comes to take Jane to the school (Lowood). About 80 girls from 9 to 20 years old Hard conditions: cold, hunger... wakes up very early Helen Burns → Jane’s friend (likes reading too) Helen thinks Miss Scatchered is right to scold her, although she is so cruel → read the Bible and do what Christ says.

Jane discovers it is a charity school. There go girls who have lost either one or both parents. Their relations pay £15 a year and people from London pay the rest.

Mr Brocklehurst came into the school. Jane’s slate fell from her hands and broke in two. Mr Brocklehurst tells everybody she is a wicked girl and a liar, and punishes her. Helen brings her coffee and bread. Miss Temple takes the two girls to her room. She is so kind and asks Dr Lloyd if Jane is a liar. Dr Lloyd explains the true story of Jane and Miss Temple tells everybody Jane is not a liar.

When spring arrives, Jane enjoys school. Lots of girls were ill with typhus fever. As a result of the poor food and bad living conditions, many girls died. Helen has tuberculosis. Jane sleeps with her. When she wakes up, Helen is dead.

The number of deaths in Lowood made the public aware of the poor conditions in which the pupils lived. Money was raised to build a new school, with improvements, and Mr Brocklehurst lost his position as manager. Jane stayed for 8 more years. The last 2 as a teacher.

When Miss Temple married and moved to another place, she decided to change her life too. She advertised in a newspaper for a job as a governess. She received an answer from Mrs Fairfax, who wanted a governess for a girl under 10 years old.

PART 3. A governess at Thornfield Thornfield Hall → the master was Mr Rochester (often away from home) Mrs Fairfax → Thornfield’s housekeeper Adèle → 7 or 8-year-old pupil. She was born in France, so it was hard to speak English for her. But Jane had learn French at Lowood, so they could communicate. Mr Rochester brought Adèle back to England to live with him after her mother died.

Grace Pool → she helps the housemaid in her work. She is always sewing in one of the rooms upstairs (she makes a laugh that seems to Jane it is a ghost).

Jane teaches Adèle in the daytime and talks to Mrs Fairfax in the evening. She felt that something was missing from her life. She wanted more action.

One day, when Adèle is ill, she walks to Hay to post a letter for the housekeeper. Suddenly, a horse slipped and fell on the ice. His rider hurts his leg. Jane helps him, until he jumps on to the horse’s back and leaves.

When she returns to Thornfield, she stays a while outside. When she came in, the servants told her that Mr Rochester had arrived, and that he had hurt his leg when his horse slipped on ice on the road to Hay.

After the return of the master, Thornfield Hall became quite busy. Jane enjoyed the new atmosphere. Jane gets to know Mr Rochester. She thinks he is peculiar, and quite rude. Jane tells him she thinks he is not handsome.

Mr Rochester past: he was so in love with a French dancer, Céline, so he rented a house and hired servants for her. One evening, he visited her, but she was out. So he waited for her. She arrived on her

Jane wakes up again for a noise. Mr Rochester tells the guests it’s a servant who has had a nightmare. Mr Rochester goes to Jane’s room for help. Mr Mason has been attacked by Grace Pool (knife and teeth) Mr Mason leaves early in the morning with the doctor, so nobody notices it.

Mr Rochester tells Jane that Miss Ingram could cure him of his wickedness. He says he is in love.

Trouble at Gateshead → Jane’s cousin, John Reed, wasted all his money and some of his mother’s, and he has been in debt and in prison most of his life. He had killed himself. Mrs Reed had suddenly fallen ill when she heard of her son’s death. She goes to Gateshead. Her aunt confesses she broke her promise to her husband about her and she gives her a letter (John Eyre, Jane’s uncle, wanted her to inherit all his property when he dies).

Mr Rochester is going to marry Miss Ingram, so Jane must leave the house. Jane confesses her feelings to Mr Rochester. He asks her to marry him. She accepts.

Mr Rochester insists on buying Jane jewels and clothes, but she refuses. Mr Rochester confesses that she wanted to make Jane believe he wished to marry Miss Ingram to make her jealous, so he wanted to be as much in love with him as he was with her.

Jane tells a nightmare → Thornfield was totally destroyed. She was carrying a small child in her arms and she was trying to catch up with Mr Rochester. When she woke up, she saw a strange shape examining the wedding dress. The shape put the veil on her head. In the morning, the veil was on the floor, torn in two halves.

Jane wants to leave Mr Rochester because she believes that if his wife is alive, she would be his mistress.
