Metrology: Study of the science of measurement and the
standard units of measurement and how to trace them to
the International System of Units (SI).
Metrology is the scientific study of measurement. It encompasses the development and application
of measurement standards, techniques, and methods for measuring a wide range of physical and
chemical quantities, such as length, mass, time, temperature, electrical current, and radioactivity.
Metrology provides the foundation for the accurate and precise measurement of physical
quantities, which is essential for many scientific, industrial, and commercial applications.
The International System of Units (SI) is the modern international standard for measurement,
which is based on the International System of Quantities (ISQ). The SI is a coherent system of
units, which means that all the base units and derived units are defined in terms of a few
fundamental constants of nature, such as the speed of light, the Planck constant and the elementary
charge. The SI units are widely used in scientific, technical and industrial measurements and play
a key role in international trade and commerce.
One of the main tasks of metrology is to establish measurement standards, which are used as
reference points for all other measurements. These standards are typically kept in specialized
institutions such as national metrology institutes or laboratories. The standards are calibrated
against the SI units and provide traceability to the SI units. Measurement traceability is a key
aspect of metrology and refers to the ability of a measurement to be related to an established
reference standard.
Another important aspect of metrology is measurement uncertainty. It's a measure of the range of
values within which the true value of a measurand (the quantity being measured) is expected to
lie. Metrology provides the methods and techniques to evaluate the uncertainty of measurements,
which is essential for ensuring the quality of measurements and making reliable comparisons
between different measurements.
