ROAD ARBORICULTURE

Planting of trees on roadsides is called road arboriculture. It is one of the important aspects of roadside development. It serves the following purpose(Benefits of the planting of trees on the roadside):

  1. It provides an attractive landscape of roadsides.

  2. It provides shed to the road users.

  3. It prevents soil erosion from the roadside.

  4. It intercepts the annoying sound waves and fumes from road vehicles.

  5. In an urban area, the side planting is mainly for the beauty and therefore, ornamental and flowering variety is generally preferred. On wide urban roads, the planting of shrubs is done on the medians and trees are planted on roadsides. Wide crowned trees on roadsides are generally not preferred.

Objects of Road Side Development and Arboriculture

Roadside development and arboriculture are undertaken to achieve the following objects/benefits:

  1. To provide an attractive landscape of roadside.

  2. To provide pleasant views of parking places.

  3. To prevent soil erosion from the roadside.

  4. To reduce headlight glare during night driving by the planted shrubs.

  5. To intercept the annoying sound waves and fumes from road vehicles by the planted trees.

  6. It provides shed to the road user.

Method of Care of Tree on Road Side

After planting of trees on roadsides, the following operations are carried out on trees for their care throughout the life span:

1. Pruning and defrocking

Pruning is required for plants after they are placed in position. This process helps them to be denser and growing straight. It is done in cold weather only with the help of a sharp knife.

2. Lopping

Lopping is done to drain the tree to develop a certain shape during its growth. In this process, extra branches of the tree are removed which otherwise interfere with traffic.

3. Felling

Felling is a process of removing the over-matured or closely spaced trees.

Rules for Roadside Tree planting

The spacing and arrangements of the trees should be such that they do not create any obstruction in the movement of traffic. The general rules or guidelines for spacing and location of trees are as follows:

  1. The spacing between two trees in a row along the road should be within 9 m to 12 m.

  2. The trees should be planted at least 12 m apart from the centre of the carriageway.

  3. If the road is constructed on the embankment, the trees should be planted as possible as high on the sides of the embankment.

  4. In the case of water logged area, the trees should be planted on sufficient high ground.

  5. In case of metal roads, the trees should be planted in such a way that no water droplets fall on the road from the tree branches.
