OCCURRENCE & SPECIAL FEATURES
  • Microcystis (Gr. Mikros =small, kystis= bladder )is a fresh water colonial algae.
  • It is represented by 18 species.
  • Most species are euplanktonic and are aided by pseudovacuoles.
  • Proliferative multiplication impart a bluish –green colour to the pond water and form <pea soup=.
  • All species are free üoating, and form extensive water bloom. (M. aeruginosa)

THALLUS STRUCTURE
  • Thallus is in the form of colonies.

  • The colonies are free üoating and irregularly covered by colourless mucilaginous sheath.

  • The colony contains large number of very small cells which are spherical, elongated or ellipsoidal and lack individual sheath

  • Gas vacuoles are commonly present in the colony.

  • Each cell has a cell wall and a protoplasm which is differentiated into peripheral chromatoplasam and a central portion called centroplasam or nucleoplasam.

  • The central body represents an incipient nucleus

REPRODUCTION

  • Microcystis reproduces only vegetatively
  • Sexual reproduction is completely absent.
  • The vegetative reproduction takes place either
  • by ûssion or by fragmentation of the colony.
  • The ûssion is simple cell division which takes place in all planes.
  • In M. üos-aquae, nannocytes, the modiûed endospores are formed by repeated divisions of cell contents
