Lab 7a Setting Up Metasploitable on VMWare Player
Hardware requirements for these labs:
- Do not use a Wi-Fi connection. Use an Ethernet cable to connect to the network. Wi-Fi is configured for IPSec which can impede the labs from working. The additional transport and tunneling protocols do not play well with Kali or Metasploit.
What is Metasploitable?
Metasploitable is a highly vulnerable Linux distribution. Metasploitable was created by Rapid7. This Linux distribution was created for information security consults as an educational tool. In summary Metasploitable is a target operating system that is meant to be probed, scanned and exploited. Using this operating system for anything legitimate would be not be advised.
What is the purpose of this article?
This article is meant to be a step by step guide on how to download and install the virtual machine into the Oracle VirtualBox Manager. Let's get started.
You can download Metesploitable using this direct link to the Sourceforge download page.
2. Download and save Metasploitable-2 to an accessible directory. Remember where you saved it! 3. Once Metaploitable-2 is has downloaded, unzip the file to your desktop or any directory you feel comfortable working out of.
Once have Metasploitable downloaded and you have identified the location, open up the VMWare player management console. Select Open a Virtual Machine.
Browse to the downloaded, extracted Metasploitable folder location. The correct image should associate with your VMWare Player program. This is my download location, not yours.
VMWare paler will want to know if the image was moved or copied. Select copied.
Once you get to the login, proceed to the next lab, 7B. You can release the moose using the Ctrl+All keys.
