THE LOST

EMPIRE

SYIFFA MAISARAH BT MOHD NORHISHAM

Once upon a time over 11, years ago, there existed an island nation located in the middle the Atlantic Ocean populated by a noble and a very powerful race. The island was larger than Libya and Asia Minor put together and the people of this land possessed great wealth from the natural resources found throughout their island.

Atlantis is every rulers dream to rule, Every one’s island to live in And every enemies island to conquer. This island was called Atlantis. The island that was idolized by many islands and the island where a lot of people admire. Many peoplle described Atlantis as a perfect island which have everything their people needed and wanted. Everyone was certainly envious of Atlantis ant the people who resides there

Atlantis was the domain of Poseidon. It was also protected by the god of the sea himself. Years then, Poseidon suddenly fell in love and got married to a mortal woman named Cleito the daughter of Evenor and Leucippe. When Poseidon fell in love with Cleito, he created a dwelling at the top of the hill near the middle of the island and surrounded the dwelling with rings of water and land to protect her.

Poseidon then made Atlas king and namesake of the island and the ocean surrounded it while Atlas’s twin Gadeirus, or Eumelus in Greek, was given the extremity of the island toward the pillars of Hercules. After their marriage, Cleito then bore five sets of male twins who became the first rulers of Atlantis, the eldest being Atlas. Poseidon divided the lands into ten sections, each to be ruled by his son, or his heirs.

Atlantis consisting mostly of mountains in the northern portions and along the shore and encompassing a great plain in an oblong shape in the south. Beyond the city lay a fertile plain 530 km long and 190 km wide surrounded by another canal used to collect water from the rivers and streams from the mountains.

The climates was such that two harvests were possible each year to harvest variety of crops that they desire. One in the winter fed by the rains and one in the summer fed by irrigation from the canal.

Receiving all these products, they promptly furnished their temples, harbors and the rest of the country. Around their metropolis, which was at about 10 kilometers from the sea, they built a circular system of bridges and chan- nels with towers and gates and circular walls made of black, red and white stones, quarried from the moats which they coated with brass, tin and the precious ore itself called orichalcum

The capital of Atlantis was a marvel of architecture and engineering. To facilitate travel and trade, a water canal was cut through of the rings of the land and water running south for 5 miles to the sea. The city of Atlantis sat just outside the outer ring of water and spread across the plain covering a circle of 1. km.

Because of this, for generations, the people of Atlantis lived simple but wealthy and virtuous lives. But slowly, they began to change. The feeling of greed, pettiness and power has consumed and began to corrupt them with all the luxury that the island has offered them. To put it short, they became morally bankrupt

One day, a war took place between those outside the Pillars of Hercules at the Strait of Gibraltar and those who dwelt with them. The Atlanteans had conquered the parts of Libya within the Pillars of Hercules, as far as Egypt, ant the European continent and had subjected the people from there to serious slavery. The Atlanteans led an alliance of resistors against the Atlantean empire, and as the alliance disintegrated, prevailed alone against the empire, liberating the occupied lands.

“But afterwards there occurred violent earthquakes and floods; and in a single day and night of misfortune all your warlike men in a body sank into the earth, and the island of Atlantis in like manner disappeared in the depths of the sea. For which reason the sea in those parts is impassable and impenetrable, because there is a shoal of mud in the way; and this was caused by the subsidence of the island. It was believed that only a few fragments of Atlantis has survived.”

And just like that, all of the fortune that Atlantis has, along with it’s beauty dissapeared in waves. Atlantis was never the same and forever gone just because of the foolish decisions made by it’s people that angered Zeus. Deep, deep in the ocean is where it lies now. Quiet, distant and empty. No one knows if anyone survived the incident, and no one dares to go inside in the deep ocean to find out. All we know is that Atlantis is now underwater along with their foolishness
