Laboratory Exercise No. 4

LAYING OUT A SIMPLE CURVE WITH AN OBSTRUCTION

I. OBJECTIVES

  1. To know the method of laying out a simple curve by deflection angle method given that there is an obstruction

  2. To understand and actualize the underlying principles of this method based on the knowledge from the preceding lectures.

II. INTRODUCTION

Curves are usually employed to make the change in direction at the intersection of straight lines gradual. They are used to deflect a vehicle travelling along one of the tangents safely and comfortably through a deflection angle (Khan, 2015). There are two methods in laying out simple curve depending on the instrument used – linear and angular methods. Linear method is the method which restricts the use of angle measuring instruments like transit, total station and etc.

In this field work, a horizontal simple curve is to be laid out by a deflection angle. Curves are initially arranged with two straight lines called tangents. The first tangent is referred as the back tangent and the second tangent is called the forward tangent. These tangents are extended until they reach a point of intersection. The curve is set out with the use of the deflection angles which are turned at the point of curvature from the tangent to the points or stations along the curve until it reaches the point of tangency.
