LESSON PROPER

Welcome! I hope the past activity had increase your drive to continue learning using this module. Before we proceed, let us try to recall past concepts related to our topic.

Check Up 1:

Study the diagram on rock cycle below then answer the questions after it.

Question Rocks?

  1. What are the 3 types of rocks which undergoes transformations?
  2. Which causes these transformations:
    1. Metamorphic rocks to igneous rocks:_______________ _______________
    2. Igneous rocks to metamorphic rocks: __________________________
    3. Sedimentary rocks to metamorphic rocks: ______________________
  3. If you had observed the dotted arrows in the diagram, it illustrates how sediments were formed from the different types of rocks. Kindly write the process which causes this transformation. ?1.______________ ?2.______________ ?3.______________
  4. What do you think happens to the sediments if left in the environment for how many years?______________________________________________________________

What’s In

Rock Note! Were you able to recall the correct answers? Good job. You are now ready to proceed to the next step. Please flip this page to be able to see it.

Welcome to the lessons discussion. I know that you are still coping and very willing to learn more. Let’s start...

WEATHERING is the longest word in your rock twist activity. Weathering is the breakdown of rocks at the Earth’s surface, by the action of rainwater, extremes of temperature, and biological activity (Geologic 2012). It does not involve the removal or transfer of rock material from one area to the other (This is to differentiate weathering from erosion).

2 MAIN TYPES OF WEATHERING

1. MECHANICAL WEATHERING

When a rock falls from a certain height it breaks into smaller pieces without changing it physical compositions. Due to the non-alteration of the physical attribute of the rock mechanical weathering is also called as physical weathering. The following are the processes that leads to mechanical decomposition of rocks:

Process Description Frost Wedging The picture shows a rock which is a product of frost wedging. When liquids such as water and hailstones”dadalo” gets inside a joint or any opening in a rock or stone, alternate freezing and thawing happens causing the rock to crack. Can you imagine what will happen to a rock if this happens often? Salt Crystal Growth The hole on the rock can cause it to fall apart. This is due to force exerted by salt crystal pushing the rocks apart. Salt crystals may be formed from the evaporation of water leaving ions such as sodium and chlorine as salt precipitate. Abrasion It is the wearing away of rocks due to continuous collision of loose particles.

The picture starts to break due to its constant collision with natural agents such as wind, water and other rocks.

Process Description Biological Activity Breaking of rocks due to plants, animal and even humans. The physical weathering part as shown from the picture is cause by the cultivation of plant roots loosening the rock. Remember that biological activity is under mechanical weathering if it causes a rock or any object to break into smaller pieces only, it does not change the chemical composition of the rock. 2. CHEMICAL WEATHERING What happens to a nail after its been exposed to the environment for how many years? It rusted right? This is because the iron is converted to iron oxide due to its exposure to moisture or oxygen. The reddish coloration of some rocks are same with the nail. The examples given above illustrates chemical weathering which is the disintegration of rocks caused by chemical reactions. Below are the major processes of chemical weathering. Process Description Dissolution It is the removal of some minerals of rocks because of acidic solutions found in the environment leaving holes in rocks which can slowly enlarge and widen after frequent exposure. Corals and some stones are submerged to water, it reacts with acids in the water and dissolved. The presence of small holes in the picture shows the product of dissolution. Oxidation

Breakdown of rock by reacting with oxygen. It often looks like a rusty-like rock. This is because of the iron oxide being formed from the reaction of iron rich rocks to H 2 O and O 2.

Hydrolysis Hydro: Water Lysis: Split Decomposition of rocks as its minerals react with water especially acidic ones that creates various chemical reactions.

Biological Activity Breaking of rocks due to plants, animals and even humans. Biological activity can also cause chemical weathering by altering the rock’s chemical composition. Example, microorganism produces organic acids which could dissolve minerals that causes the rock to be more susceptible to weathering.

Generalization

At this point, you should be able to reflect on what you have learned in the lesson. Discuss the following briefly. 1. Define weathering in your own words. __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________ __________________________________________________________________

  1. The 2 types of weather are Mechanical and Chemical Weathering. The difference of the 2 are: __________________________________________________________

  2. The factors that affect the rate of weathering are: ___________________________

What I Have Learned

Hi! You are about to finish the race. Hang in there.

Let’s try to connect the lesson you have learned to real life situation by answering the following questions:

  1. What are the positive effects of weathering? Please cite an example you can observe in your community to support your answer.

  2. What are the negative effects of weathering? Please cite an example you can observe in your community to support your answer.

What I Can Do

Rock Note! Good job! You were able to reach this point. You’re now ready to be challenged for the last time. What are you waiting for.. flip the page.

Instructions: . Draw or capture a photo of any object undergoing weathering in your backyard, or any area nearest your home. I’m sure you could be able to take a great picture without difficulty since examples of weathering are just around you.
