Background of the painter (Juan Luna de San Pedro y Novicio Ancheta) Born: October 23, 1857, Badoc, Ilocos Norte, Philippines Died: December 7, 1899 A Filipino painter, sculptor and a political activist of the Philippine Revolution during the late 19th century. He became one of the first recognized Philippine artists. Education Background  Early Education: From his mother, Laurena (6-8 years)  Elementary: Ateneo Municipal De Manila (8-12 years)  High School: Escuela Nautica De Manila (also known as PMMA- Philippine Merchant Marine Academy) (12-16 years)  College: Academia De Dibujo y Pintura (Academy of Fine arts, in Binondo Manila)  Further Studies: Escuela De Pintura at the Academia De Bellas Artes De San Fernando, Madrid (21 years) Personal Life  Wife - Maria de la Paz Pardo de Tavera  Sons - Andres (Luling) Luna - Maria Paz (Bibi) Luna Career  Nautical Officer, Passed the government examination and granted the title of licentiate Pilot for High Seas  Diplomatic agent in Paris for the Philippine Revolutionary Government based in Hong Kong in 1898  Don Lorenzo Guerrero – Juan Luna’s first painting teacher, discovered Luna’s talent in painting and also advice his parents to send him to Spain to develop his talent.  Alejo Vera – One of his private teachers and a famous contemporary painter in Spain, took Luna to Rome to undertake certain commissions

 Juan Luna’s talent was recognized in 1878 with the opening of the first art exposition in Madrid, which is called the Exposicion Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Demonstration of Beautiful Arts) Death  Early December 1899, Luna arrived in Hong Kong  Two days later, he suffered a heart attack  A second heart attack on December 7, 1899 proved fatal before a doctor could reach him, also he was first to arrive in the hospital before the doctor came and was said to be DOA (Dead on arrival)  He died at 42 years old  He was buried in Hong Kong  Two years later his remains were brought to Manila for final burial. Relevance of the Document  They are incredibly significant, particularly their accomplishments. It merely demonstrates that we are not uncivilized or barbaric, that we are talented, and that we are also capable of achieving what other nations have. The artwork that we possess tells a Filipino story. You can tell how much Amorsolo and Juan Luna love the Filipino people and their nation via their artistic creations. Last but not least, we regarded the works of art as important historical records, which explains why they are important.

  1. La Muerte de Cleopatra (The Death of Cleopatra): by Luna depicts the terrible death of the Egyptian queen Cleopatra in a disturbing and emotionally powerful manner.

  2. "The Parisian Life" (1892): This genre painting depicts a moment in time in late 19th- century Paris. It is famous for how it portrays Filipino immigrants in Europe.

  3. "El Pacto de Sangre" (1884): The historical Blood Compact between Miguel López de Legazpi and Datu Sikatuna is shown in the painting, commonly known as "Blood Compact," which stands for the cordial ties between the Spanish and the Filipinos.

  4. Damas Romanas. Damas Romanas or "The Roman Dames" (1882): is an oil on canvas painting by Luna created in 1877 while a student at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando) in Madrid, Spain. Alejo Valera, a Spanish painting teacher, took Luna as an apprentice and transported him

  5. Tampuhan, 1895. Tampuhan is a 1895 classic oil on canvas painting. It depicts a Filipino man and a Filipino woman having a lovers' quarrel.

  6. Ensueños de Amor, 1890. Literally "Daydreams of Love", is a "dreamy" oil on wood painting. It depicts Luna's wife Maria de la Paz Pardo de Tavera while sound asleep.

  7. Espana y Filipinas, 1886. Espana y Filipinas is oil on wood painting, it is an allegorical depiction of two women together, one a representation of Spain and the other of the Philippines.
