English Cognitive Domain: Grammar

I. OBJECTIVES

General: Allows the students to learn about kinds of modals. Specific: At the end of the lesson, student should be able to:

Distinguish the different kinds of modals.  Utilize the kinds of modals wisely and effectively.  Recognize and use modals correctly in forming a sentence.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Topic : Kinds of Modals

B. Materials : powerpoint presentation

III. LESSON PROCEDURE

A. Daily Routine : Prayer and Greetings  Room Conditioning  Checking of Attendance

B. Anticipatory Set : The teacher will let the students indicate what does modals do. Things modals do:

They agree with everything. Don’t have a “to” form (infinitives) Indicate modality.

C. Lesson Proper : The students will study the different kinds of conjunction. Modals: Modals of Necessity  Should/ ought to- advice (good command)  Must- command (50% strength) Examples: You should study your lesson. You must come with me.

Modals of Ability  Can- real ability/ permission  Could- imaginary ability Examples: I can play drums. I could fly now because of this trafficjam.

 Modals of Certainty  Must- something is true

Example: He must have gove that way.  Modals of Possibility May- real (100% strength)  Might- real (sometimes with if clause) Examples: It may rain. If I had only money, I might go to Korea.

Remember: that you can’t combine 2 modals in one sentence.

IV. EVALUATION To initially evaluate students understanding about coordinating conjunction, students will answer the following quiz items.

Identify the proper modals needed in each sentence.

  1. You’ve been driving all day. You be exhausted!

  2. You have such a beautiful voice. You ________ sing for us!

  3. Mat ______ be lazy but he is certainly not stupid.

  4. I ______ speak Swedish, Dutch and Japanese.

  5. Parents ______ take care of their children.

V. ASSIGNMENT Create your own sentences using the modals. One in each conditions. Present your work tomorrow.
