Hymen, oh hyménée! also known as Boda Romana (Roman wedding) was painted by a Filipino artist named Juan Luna. He started painting this masterpiece since the year 1886 and finished it on the year 1887 which means It took him a year to finish this piece of art. Working on canvas, the painting is 1 m tall and 2 m long. This painting depicts a scene of a roman wedding ritual portraying The bride as it enters into the grooms chapel And there were some guests behind her excitingly throwing flowers and cheering her in their wedding. It is a painting with a light color scheme and lighter subject. The hymen o hyménéé emphasizes the joy felt in a wedding.

The first thing we can notice in the painting is that it is so bright. The lines are soft and realistic. The color on this painting is mostly white, red and blue. The painter used cool colors in his artwork with white as the central color that attracts attention. It is about the bride entering the grooms chapel and the guests behind her were cheering for her as she walks. The ladies behind her has light colors while men was painted with warmer colors. And we can see that there was a man stopping a goat from eating the flowers on the ground. The proportions of the bodies in the painting were drawn fairly as it would look like in the real life. And the bright colors such as white symbolizes a positive mood and joy.

I believe that Juan Luna’s painting, Hymen, o Hyménée depicts the cultural universal views. The painting focuses on the wedding where it symbolizes the love, mutual respect, equality, joy and sacrifice.

For me, this painting successful l because the lines, lighting, colors and shapes were successfully drawn which gives the painting a more realistic vibe. And it deserves more than a bronze medal.
