Module 1 Lesson 1

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the lesson, the learners are able to:

  1. define science and technology
  2. identify the role of science and technology in the society

Discussion: Science comes from the Latin word, scientia, meaning, “ knowledge”. It refers to a systematic and methodical activity of building and organizing knowledge about how the universe interacts through observation, and experimentation. Science can also be viewed in different ways:

  1. Science as an idea This includes ideas, theories, systematic explanations, about natural and physical world.
  2. Science as an intellectual activity It encompasses a systematic and practical study of the natural and physical world.
  3. Science as a body of knowledge It is a body of knowledge that deals with the process of learning about the natural and physical world.
  4. Science as apersonal and social activity It explains that science is both knowledge and activities done by human beings to improve and to survive life.

Technology comes from the Greek word, techne, meaning, art, skill, or uncunning of hand. Technology, for its part, is the application of scientific knowledge, laws, and principles to produce Services, materials, tools and machines aimed at solving real world problems.

Nowadays, science and technology are advance. This is manifested in the day to day activities of people, and the machines or gadgets they use. In this regard , the life of humans is more productive, easier, and more comfortable. A good example is the use of a mobile phone. Before, people use the landline phone to communicate. You can only call other person if you are inside your home. But now a days, anywhere you go, you can now call other people. Before, you need to buy a camera to take pictures, now, you can have it all in your phone. In the course of time, with the advancement and pervasive use of technology, There are drawbacks and challenges being posed in human life. The introduction of machine in doing a work would eventually replace humans. Take for example the act of harvesting palay. Before, a farmer needs to employ ten or more people to harvest palay in a hectare of land. This activity may last for three days. Bu,t with the use of harvesting machine, harvesting a hectare of palay can be done for a day. This situation could suggest positive as well as negative impact on the life and survival of man. Thus, science and technology serve a double-edged function. This is well stated in the lines of Carl Sagan(2006): “We live in a society obsolutely dependent on science and technology, and yet have cleverly arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. That’s a clear prescription for disaster”.

Evaluation: TRUE OR FALSE QUIZ
