Reflection Paper

COVID-19 is without a doubt one of the most dangerous threats the world has ever faced. Despite the uncertainty and fear, signs of hope and solidarity, yearning for togetherness, are becoming increasingly evident. Our world is essentially being turned off; it's becoming a place we don't recognize. Markets are deserted, shopping areas are out of stock, and our schools are closed. It feels as if the world has come to an end.

Upon seeing the poster and reading its description, I immediately understood what the author wanted to express. Even before the global pandemic started, mental health problems were a huge problem to everyone. Some of us had already been suffering from depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and their personal issues.

All of that worsened the moment that the world was hit with the pandemic. Schools, jobs, and almost every establishment in the world closed. Many people lost their jobs and their sources of income. Agonizingly, some friends and families passed away, and most if not, all hospitals were filled with people who had been infected with the COVID-19 virus. With all of these happening, many were filled with fear, many were filled with doubt, and many more lost their hope.

While pondering, one of the things I discerned from the digital poster was that the pandemic has become a very huge barrier that affected each and everyone’s mental health. As shown on the digital poster, the society weighs more than mental health which for me, means that mental health is perceived as something that is not that important compared to other situations that the world is facing right now. I firmly believe that mental health is very important for living a stable, and healthy life. It includes a person's emotional, social, and psychological well-being. Every day, it has an impact on how we think, feel, and act. Our mental health has an impact on how we make decisions, how we deal with stress, and how we interact with people. It is a crucial aspect of a person's existence. It has an effect on our actions, emotions, and thoughts. In activities such as employment, academics, and interpersonal interactions, a healthy mental state enhances effectiveness and productivity.

A huge portion of those affected were students like me. I know that a lot of students suffered from trying so hard to keep up with their studies during this setup where everyone needed an internet connection just to be able to attend their classes. I am deeply saddened by my fellow students who gave in to the pressure that they felt which affected their mental health and gave in to their struggles.

Despite all of the struggles that every one of us is experiencing right now, I firmly believe that looking out for each other is a huge help. As seen on the digital poster, the artist inserted or drew a group of people holding each other’s hand which can mean that the artist also believed that love, unity, and camaraderie will restore and strengthen our hopes.

I suppose the main reason why I chose this digital poster as my basis for this reflection paper is that upon seeing it, I realized how relatable it is to everyone especially to students like me. It represents the silent hardships and struggles that we are currently facing in this time and age. It represents the togetherness that we yearn for, the connectedness and affection that we all surely miss. It represents those who gave in to the stress and pressure that they were feeling. It represents the good that we can do together. It reminds me that amidst this pandemic, the thing that shines most is our hope. Our hope for a better tomorrow, a better future. A hope that tells us that this is not the end, a hope that tells us that we can stand taller than ever before. A hope that unites us.

As told in by the author of the artwork, we live in a world today where the population suffers from persecutions, inequality, oppression, depression, and more. I can only imagine the struggles of the people who are and were affected by these problems. I believe that addressing mental health issues are of utmost importance so

that more people would be aware and seek help from professionals. Together, we can raise mental health awareness and spread hope across the world.
