SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTEXT: The industrial revolution also gave rise to the middle class, known as principalias, in the Philippines. This economic capability allowed for sending children to Europe for western education, leading to the formation of ilustrados exposed to European ways. The ilustrados organized the Propaganda Movement, advocating for reforms by highlighting the poor conditions of Filipinos in the country. The second part of the Chapter seeks to explain how the social, political, economic, and cultural events of the 19th century shaped Rizal to become a hero.
