In the 19th century, Spain
faced significant changes as it lost
many colonies, leading to colonial
instability.
The result the Filipino people
suffered from the evil of
oppressive colonial rule in the
Philippines, with issues like
maladministration of justice, racial
prejudice, forced labor, and lack of
representation in the Spanish
Cortes affecting the Filipino
people.
ECONOMIC CONTEXT:
The industrial revolution
brought about technological
innovations that revolutionized
production and transportation,
leading to the creation of tools,
ships, and machinery.
The opening of the Suez Canal
facilitated trade, bringing
countries closer together and
impacting Spain's relationship with
the Philippines.
SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTEXT:
The industrial revolution also
gave rise to the middle class,
known as principalias, in the
Philippines. This economic
capability allowed for sending
children to Europe for western
education, leading to the
formation of ilustrados exposed to
European ways.
The ilustrados organized the
Propaganda Movement,
advocating for reforms by
highlighting the poor conditions of
Filipinos in the country.
The second part of the
Chapter seeks to explain how the
social, political, economic, and
cultural events of the 19th century
shaped Rizal to become a hero.
