“The Road Not Taken” I. Introduction “The Road Not Taken” was the first published in 1916 in the collection of Robert Frost Mountain Interval. It is the first poem in the collection, and the first poem Frost had printed in Italics. This is one of the best-known but most-often-misunderstood poems. This poem is more than a poem about someone who is trying to decide which road he’s going to take a stroll through the woods. It’s actually a poem about the journey of life and also it is about the choices in which road to take that represents the different decisions that we sometimes have to make and how those decisions will affect the future. II. Objectives a. define the poem; b. identify the positive and negative values; and c. perform actively the task given. III. Learning Activities a. Author Robert Lee Frost was born in San Francisco, USA on March 26, 1874 his work is basically inspired by the rural life of New England and he wrote in traditional verse forms, he is considered to be a modern poet because he used the language as it is actually spoken and his poems deals with complex social, psychological and philosophical themes in which are sometimes ambiguous as well as ironic. He is one of the most popular and often-quoted American poets. He was highly honored during his lifetime and was the recipient of four Pulitzer Prizes. Frost was named Poet laureate of Vermont. b. Definition of Terms

  1. Diverged - separated and took a different direction. Two roads diverged in a wood.

  2. Yellow wood - a forest with decomposing leaves. Two roads diverged in a yellow wood.

  3. Undergrowth - dense growth of plants and bushes means the forest To where it bent in the undergrowth.

  4. Fair - as good as the other one Then took the other, as just as fair.

  5. Claim - better option And having perhaps the better claim.

  6. Grassy - unused Because it was grassy and wanted wear.

  7. Wanted wear - had not been used Because it was grassy and wanted wear.

  8. Trodden - walked over In leaves no stop had trodden black.

  9. Sigh - deep breath Shall be telling this with a sigh.

  10. Hence - here, in the future Somewhere ages and ages hence. c. Distinction The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost is a well-known poem about the journey of life. It is a narrative poem, it reads naturally or conversationally, and begins as a kind of photographic depiction of a quiet moment in woods. It consists of four stanzas of 5 lines each. It is the poem about making choices, and the choices that will shape us. It is one of Frost most popular works. Some have said that it is one of his most misunderstood poems, claiming that it is not simply a poem that champions the idea of “following your path”, but that the poem they suggest, expresses some irony regarding that idea.

The important message that the poet wants to give is that the choice that we make has an impact on our future and if we make a wrong choice, we regret it but cannot go back on it so, we must be wise while making a choice. Author Leon Maxwell Gellert (1892-1977), soldier, poet and journalist, was born on 17 of May 1892 at Walkersville, Adelaide, third child and elder son of James Wallis Gellert, an Australian- born clerk of Hungarian descent, and his wife Eliza Anne, Nee Sutton. He served in disastrous Gallipoli Campaign during the first World War before being wounded in a battle. b. Definition of Terms

  1. Vales - a valley I gazed upon the vales and on the rills

  3. Minstrels - a musical entertainer in the middle ages Their only minstrels are the singing trees
  4. Wistfully - with a feeling of vague or regretful longing And thus I mused and sorrowed wistfully

also made a mention to the trees and plants rustling, the waves crashing they seemed to be telling him a story. He then made a last respectful reference to the soldiers that died in the battle. IV. Evaluation
