PROMOTING INTER-RELIGIOUS DIALOGUE IN THE PHILIPPINES
1. The situation of the suffering and persecuted church around the world the island province
of the mindanao which has a following attack against Christians perpetrated by Abu
Sayyaf an Islamic fundamentalist group allied with Isis that is a lone voice calling for
peace and reconcilliation between Muslims and Christians.
2. Mindanao is a place ravaged by the complexity of cultures and religions. Unlike in other
regions of the country, Islamic influence permeates in many parts of the island. Marawi,
the country’s lone Islamic City, is the most populous area in the ARMM. In the midst of
this Islamic city stands the Cathedral of Maria Auxiliadora (St. Mary’s Church) which
houses the Vicariate of Marawi.
3. In Zamboanga City, an Italian priest, Fr. Sebastian D’Ambra PIME, touched by his
experience of conflict between Muslims and Christians in Mindanao, started the Silsilah
Dialogue Movement. Silsilah has continuously promoted harmony, solidarity and peace
through formation on interreligious dialogue especially on issues related to Muslim-
Christian understanding.
4. Muslim-Christian dialogue became imperative in Mindanao at the height of the armed
struggle and the peace process. The Bishop-Ulama Conference was formed with the
vision that it could become a catalyst for sustainable peace by initiating dialogues aimed
at improving understanding between Muslims and Christians.
5. It aims to contribute in attaining a harmonious Philippine Society by advocating
interreligious dialogue in its various forms as a mechanism for peace building. It also
aims to promote dialogue to enhance mutual understanding, harmony and cooperation
among peoples of different faiths.
6. Interfaith dialogue, also sometimes referred to as inter-religious dialogue, is ideally an
open and respectful exchange of views between individuals and groups with different
religious backgrounds and heritage based on mutual understanding and respect.This
dialogue helps us address living in a diverse and multicultural world, even if we don’t
always understand all the differences we encounter. As long as it is conducted with
mutual respect, interfaith dialogue moves us towards fulfilling a shared responsibility for
the world around us.
7. This is precisely what global citizenship education prepares people for, and where
