(M9AL-Ig-h-i-1)

Specific Learning Objective:

Determine the direction of opening of the parabola, the vertex, the axis

of symmetry and minimum or maximum value, of the quadratic functions.

A. Reviewing previous

lesson or presenting

the new lesson

Ask the following questions:

1.) What is the linear term of y = 4x 2 + 2x – 3?

2.) What is the linear term of y = x 2 – 5x?

3. What is the constant term of y = x 2 – 5x?

4. Can the quadratic term be zero?

B. Establishing a

purpose for the

lesson)

Literacy:

Note: (Let learners arrange the given letters to form a word PARABOLA.

And let them arrange the words to form a complete sentence.)

A parabola is a U-shaped plane curve where any point is at an equal

distance from a fixed point.

C. Presenting

examples/Instances

of the new lesson

Applied knowledge of content within and across curriculum teaching areas.

Science: Describe the horizontal and vertical motions of a projectile.

(The teacher will ask about parabola/s and let students give example that

shows parabolas or parabolic path).

D. Discussing the new

concepts and

practicing new skills

Quadratic Functions

The graph of a quadratic function is a parabola.

A parabola can open up or downward.

If the parabola opens upward, the lowest point

is called the vertex (minimum).

If the parabola opens downward, the vertex

is the highest point (maximum).

Standard Form

The standard form of a quadratic function is y = ax 2 + bx + c.

The parabola will open up when the

a value is positive.

The parabola will open downward

when the a value is negative.

(Note: The teacher will continue to discuss the lesson).

E. Discussing new

concepts and

practicing new skills

(GROUP ACTIVITY)

Battleship

HOW TO PLAY: (ICT Integration)

 Questions must be answered correctly to reveal the block selected

 If you answer correctly AND hit a ship, you may gain 2 points.

 If the answer is wrong, it’s the opponent’s chance to attack/answer.

F. Developing mastery

(Leads to formative

assessment 3)

Group Activity: Try This!

Group 1: Determine the vertex and axis of symmetry

Group 2: Identify the opening of the graph, minimum or maximum value

Direction: Determine the direction of opening of the parabola, the vertex, the

axis of symmetry and minimum or maximum value, of the following

quadratic functions.

G. Finding practical

application of

concepts

and skills in daily

living)

Carl Allan hit the volleyball at 3 ft above the ground with an initial velocity

of 32 ft/sec. The path of the ball is given by the function S(t) = -16t 2 + 32t +

3, where S is the height of the ball at t seconds. What is the maximum height

of the ball?

a. What kind of function is used to model the path of the volleyball?

b. What is the maximum height by the ball?

c. What is represented by the maximum point of the graph?

Real life scenario: HOTS Questions

Like graphs of quadratic function, your life is full of ups and downs. Without

the “downs” your “ups” would mean nothing.

*Have you encountered any situation that you feel so down? How did you

manage to stand and move up?

Applied knowledge of content within and across curriculum teaching areas.

*How will you apply the lesson on solving quadratic equation to real life

situation?

H. Making

generalization and

abstraction about the

lesson

Guide Question for Generalization:

1. What are the steps in finding the vertex?

2. How do you determine the direction of opening of the parabola, the vertex,

the axis of symmetry and minimum or maximum value, of the quadratic

functions?

F. Evaluating learning Direction: In a ½ sheet of paper answer the following questions.

Determine the direction of opening of the parabola, the vertex, the axis of

symmetry and minimum or maximum value, of the following quadratic

functions.

Quadratic Function Opening

of

Parabola

Vertex Axis of

symmetry

Minimum

or

maximum

value

1. f(x) = (x - 3) 2

2. f(x) = -(x +2) 2 + 1

3. f(x) = 3x 2 - 6x + 5

G. Additional activities

for application or

remediation

DIRECTION: Sketch the graph following quadratic functions. Determine

the direction of opening of the parabola, the vertex, the axis of symmetry and

minimum or maximum value of the following quadratic functions.

1. f(x) = x 2 + 3x – 6

2. f(x) = 2x 2 + 2x - 7

3. f(x) = x 2 - x - 10
