####### For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Health 6 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Consumer Health. This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from public institutions to assist the learners. The teacher or facilitator worked hard for the learners to meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling. This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances. As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

Consumer Health

Everyone is a consumer. We consume goods and services for our day-to- our day-to-day existence. As consumers we need to be informed about the importance of consumer health through wise decision in buying health products and availing of beneficial health services. Through this lesson you are envisioned to be able to protect yourselves from health fraud and reject from malpractices. You are able to learn reliable health information from different sources and choose or purchase health products in the market wisely.

Importance of consumers Health Learning consumer health will help you become a wise consumer. You will be able to make wise and informed decisions when purchasing products or availing services. Aside from protection from fraud and malpractice, you will also have the ability to differentiate valid health information from myths and misconceptions. People should be aware of the vital health topics and be educated about preventive medicine services to achieve good quality of living. Consumer health provides individuals with knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, and capacity to become a responsible consumer.   1. Health Information

Consumers have a wealth of information available. Sources books, newspapers, magazine articles, brochures, fliers, product labels and directions, radio and television commercials, and the internet. It can be from health agencies, health educators, and health experts. It can also be your family and friends. Despite the easy access to these, consumers need to make sense of the information explosion. You might encounter health terms that you still need further explanation on or read articles that are contradictory to each other, which make it more confusing. When these happen, keep an open mind. Like other industries, health care is constantly evolving. It takes years of studies and experiments until a health claim in provided to the public. Thus, be mindful of your source of health information. It should be valid and reliable. 2. Health product Anything that affects your health can be consider a health product. It can be cleaning agents, food, personal care products, and medicine. Cleaning agents Food Medicine Cleaning agents are substances, usually liquids, powders, sprays, or granules, that are used to remove dirt, including dust, stains, and bad smells clutter on surfaces. Proposes of cleaning agents include health, beauty, absence of offensive odor, avoidance of shame, avoiding the spreading of dirt and contaminants to oneself and others. Some cleaning agents can kill bacteria and clean at the same time. Food is a substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body. It is usually of plant or animals’ origin. It contains essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, or minerals. Eating a wide variety of nutrient- rich foods is the best way for most people to obtain the nutrients they need to be healthy and reduce their risk of chronic disease. Medicines are any substance or substances used in treating disease, injury, or illness; medicament; remedy. Medicines

Personal care 3. Health services Personal care includes products as diverse as lip balm, cleansing pads, colognes, cotton swabs, cotton pads, deodorant, eye liner, facial tissue, hair clippers, lip gloss, lipstick, lotion, make- up, nail files, pomade, perfumes, razors, talcum powder, shaving cream, skin cream, toilet paper, and wet wipes. Different helpful health services are being experienced and enjoyed by the consumers. These services are carried out by health professionals like doctors, nurses, dentists, dieticians, educators, scientists, chemists, and others. Dentist Also known as dental surgeon, a dentist is a health care practitioner who specializes in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases and conditions of the oral cavity. Dermatologist A dermatologist can diagnose and treat disorders of the skin, mouth, external genitalia, hair, and nails, such as skin cancers, moles, allergic disorders, and scarring. Dietitian / Nutritionist A nutritionist is a person who advises on matters of food and nutrition impacts on health. Ophthalmologist An ophthalmologist can diagnose and treat problems related to the eyes and vision, including vision correction with glasses or contact lenses and treatment of disease such as glaucoma.

Nurse Nurses who receive special additional training to perform physical examinations, make diagnoses, and prescribe treatment, often under the supervision of a physician. Pharmacist A pharmacist mixes and dispenses medications.
