DIGITAL SELF
Present 3 social media apps that influences the digital self.
1. Facebook
➢ Facebook is a social networking site that makes it easy for you to connect and share with
family and friends online. Originally designed for college students, Facebook was created
in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg while he was enrolled at Harvard University. By 2006,
anyone over the age of 13 with a valid email address could join Facebook. Today,
Facebook is the world's largest social network, with more than 1 billion users worldwide
(Downey, 2022). This site allows people to connect with others regardless of where they
are situated in the world. With almost 2.7 billion users, it has become the most powerful
social media site till date. It is nearly impossible to find a modern teen whose life is not
impacted through Facebook. Many people irrespective of their age groups, already
created accounts on this site. This includes students as well. Students started using
Facebook for various purposes ranging from entertainment to education. It is no doubt
that Facebook helps students in many ways. And in contrast, it can harm them too in a
way that can harm their mental health. By knowing the pros and cons, students will know
how to use this social networking site without negatively affecting their lives (Room,
2020).
Conclusion:
After reflecting on what social media platform I use the most, I would have to say that I
spend most of my time on Facebook. As a matter of fact, it shows the good and happy
side of me, but it doesn’t show everything since I am a private person, like I tend to not
post everything on social media regarding on what happen in my life especially my
achievements to avoid the attraction of evil eyes. And by that, it portrays one side of my
life and thankfully it is the good side. Using this platform, it also helps me to reconnect
with my family, friends and loved ones even though they are far from me. On the other
hand, the self that I portray on Facebook vs my actual self is quite different, in a way that
in digital world, I am extrovert, funny, confident and have many friends. While in my
actual self, I would say that I am introvert, lack of confident, cold and have few friends
which is I considered as my real friend, since I do believe in quality vs quantity. I admit,
sometimes I shared funny memes and I complain a lot about my mental health, sleepless
nights, weight gain, politics, stupidity in general and whatever pops up in my mind but as
I grow older, I realized and learned to accept my boring self and as much as possible
avoid posting stupidity in social media.
