Assignment: Summary and Reflection Paper

Mother Tongue-based Multilingual Education is one of the revisions to the fundamental educational curriculum brought about by the new K–12 program. Particularly, it will be introduced in kindergarten and grades one to three. Like all other subjects, Mother Tongue also has a guides to follow called the curriculum framework, this is the overall structure for organizing learning and teaching. After reviewing the guiding principles and the curriculum guide itself, I can say that it is well-organized, and well-cohesive. Its primary goal is to offer a structure for educators, textbook authors, and teachers to use when creating instructional materials and assessments that include clear and concise learning activities and experiences. It makes sure that the educational opportunities offered to students are appropriate for their developmental stages, modes of perception, and methods of acquiring knowledge of the outside world.

We can relate mother tongue instruction and acquisition to many studies, much like the theories covered in previous lessons. The theories developed by Jean Piaget, Jim Cummins, and Albert Bandura can actually use to learning and teaching mother tongue. I learned about these theories' meaning and purpose because we had to study and present them in class. Of all the theories discussed, I would like to give an emphasis to Social Learning Theory which is founded by Albert Bandura, as I believe that this is the finest theory to connect on teaching and learning mother tongue and the simplest approach for someone to acquire a language. The contents covered in this lesson made me realize that there are a variety of learning theories that I should be aware of in order to become inclusive and successful teacher in the future, considering that I am studying Bachelor of Elementary Education and supposed to be able to teach all subjects including mother tongue. Supporting the ongoing study of the mother tongue is crucial for a variety of reasons. It has a legal bases which includes the Republic Act No. 10157 or also called The Kindergarten Education Act where it states that the primary language of instruction for teaching and learning in kindergarten in public schools shall be the learner's mother tongue. The only issue is that the exceptions indicated in the MTB-MLE legal basis are not actually followed by others. In most schools here in Tarlac and Pampanga, the mother tongue taught to children is the Filipino language instead of Kapampangan and that seems to be losing sense. I believe, in order to teach MTB-MLE effectively, the curriculum including its legal bases should be study thoroughly. Teachers should also enter at least one of those four training programs that provide them with pedagogical knowledge and skills as well as the theories, principles, and practical skills that they will need in teaching MTB MLE.

I already understand the value of mother tongue even back then, I am one of those people who believed that children learn more effectively and more quickly if they use the language they grew up to and the language they are most comfortable with because I experience it first-hand. I can say that mother tongue really helps children to prevent knowledge gaps and accelerate learning and comprehension. This is essential especially in primary school as it provides a strong educational foundation in the first language and promotes inclusivity and high-quality learning. So, to reap its benefits, we need trained teachers, as this is a crucial element of successful and effective MTB MLE.
