First Quarter-Module 5:

Cell Modifications

WHAT’S MORE

ACTIVITY 3

Cell modifications Location Functions

  1. Basal Lamina -lies underneath the epithelial cells.

-It provides support to the overlying epithelium, which limits the contact between epithelial cells and other types of cells in the tissue.

  1. -Adherens junctions, Lateral Epithelium Provides a strong bond between the sides of adjacent epithelial cell membranes.

  2. -Microvilli, Apical Epithelium It increases the surface area for absorption and secretion.

  3. Cilia Apical Epithelium -cilia are used for locomotion which contributes to their feeding process.

  4. -Tight junctions, -within the epithelium. It blocks the flow of fluids between epithelium.

WHAT I CAN DO

If I were given a chance to modify some structure of the cell I will make the mitochondria and nucleus bigger than its normal size and I will locate the nucleus on the center of the cell. I will make the nucleus bigger and locate it in the center to make the cell more active, because the nucleus is the brain of the cell and it controls other parts so that if I locate it in the middle of the cell it will be much easier to send commands to other cell organelles. Also I want to make the mitochondria bigger because its function is to produce energy that is needed by the cell so that if it is big enough it can produce more energy that the cell can use.
