ILIGAN CITY NIGHT
MARKET: A THREAT TO
SECURITY
By Erika Perales
Food, beverages, souvenirs, and thrift clothes are just some of the products offered by a night
market. It allows you to enjoy and appreciate unique cultural experiences. This has become an
eye-catcher in many places worldwide, particularly in Asian countries, where everyone loves to
hang out and experience the local culture under the moon.
In addition, not only the local business gain benefits but also economically and culturally. The
night market serves as a dining plate of businessmen and a place for the people to showcase their
culture, reflecting the traditional identity of the location.
As Iligan City’s night market reopens after five years, the city becomes lively again. It reignites
the flame of the city’s lost candle of joy. Many people anticipated and celebrated the comeback
of the night market and couldn’t wait to taste the new food trend in the city. Many students,
especially from Iligan Computer Institute (ICI) are too excited to experience the night fun at
Iligan City Public Plaza.
Although significant benefits of night markets have been recognized with a wide array of
economic, social, cultural, and historical values, several negative effects of night markets on the
community have also been noted (Hung & Wu, 2020). These downsides of night markets include
several issues, such as hygiene, safety, chaotic atmosphere, noise, and traffic jams (Tsai, 2013).
Numerous crime incidents in the city surfaced these past few weeks. Most of these incidents
happened at night. The threat to our security is getting higher. As our city becomes perilous at
night, can we assure the safety of our people? Can we guarantee the safety and security of the
consumers and sellers?
Half of the consumers are students from different schools and tend to wait for the night market to
start instead of going home early. This has become their norm as they want to enjoy the night at
Plaza. Thus, these students will be at risk.
Yes, it greatly benefits our economic growth, but is it worth risking the people's lives? The real
issue here is that we forgot to look at it from a different angle, that this can be a great opportunity
for criminals, thieves, or even terrorists. As I’ve noticed, the security force in that area isn’t that
tight.
