The Habit of Daily Self-Renewal In Anatomy and Physiology, what is the self-regulating process by maintaining stability while adjusting to changing external conditions? Homeostasis, it means a state of balance. Balance is a necessity for us to be able to regulate and renew ourselves to be able to effectively continue our work.

Good morning, I am Chastity de Ramos, and I am here to talk about the process of Self- Renewal, or as I like to call it “Sharpen the Saw”. As a matter of fact, this is the last habit that is helping me through tough times. I read it from the book written by Steven Covey, entitled “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People”. I heard of it on the first day of my work as a Human Resource trainee at Yazaki Torres. There are actually 7 habits in total, ‘sharpen the saw’ is the last process that you have to go through to achieve self-renewal. I personally achieve my highest achievement so far, by exercising this so called habits I was able to reap a great reputation at my former alma mater.

Picture this imagine. you are going for a walk in the forest when you come upon a man sawing down a tree.

 “What are you doing?” you ask. “I’m sawing down a tree,” he says.  “How long have you been at it?” You ask.  “Two or three hours so far,” he said, sweat dripping from his chin.  “Your saw looks dull,” you say. “Why don’t you take a break and sharpen it?”  “I can’t. I’m too busy sawing,” is his reply. As observers, we could see that the continuous cutting was dulling the blade. And the greater the effort that is required to keep sawing, the duller the blade becomes. Of course, the solution was for the woodcutter to stop every now and again to sharpen the saw. He was so absorbed in the work that he didn't see the use in taking a break and doing what was necessary to make his job easier.

This tells us to take the time to pause and "sharpen our saw." "Sharpening the Saw" is akin to "self-care" or "self-renewal." This entails keeping and improving your most valuable asset—you. It involves maintaining a well-balanced self-renewal programme, to renew and refresh all four areas of your life: physical, emotional, cerebral, and spiritual. It’s about regularly investing in ourselves so that we can reap dividends on a continual basis. It means working smarter, not harder. Sharpen the Saw keeps you refreshed. You boost your ability to generate and deal with the obstacles that surround you. Without it, the body gets weak, the mind becomes mechanical, the emotions grow raw, the spirit becomes insensitive, and the individual becomes selfish. Not a pretty picture, is it?

I go through times where I am depleted, depressed, unmotivated, and pissed off, in which is my usual mood presently. On days when I'm feeling down, I'll try to force myself to work by means of sheer mental grit. I'll set Pomodoro timers and encourage myself to "just work for 15 minutes." I'll set out all the productivity methods I've acquired over the years. But they often never work. In fact, I start to moan and complain about all the small and stupidest things, I’m starting to get grouchy, (irritable). That continues on until I spiral downwards. My mother would tell me to take a quick nap or relax; then I would often glower at her and reply “Andami ko pang gagawin eh!!!”. In which she will response, “You’re not getting anything done if you keep complaining. Just take a short nap to get rid of your bad mood.” And from that day on whenever I’m in a funk or not in a great mood, I recharge myself.

Taking intentional timeouts can considerably boost your performance in life. Making time for oneself to love is not selfish; it is self-care. This may seemingly curtail your productivity in the short-term, it will greatly enhance it in the long-term, as you won’t ultimately be sidelined by physical sickness, mental collapse, and just plain exhaustion. It increases your sense of agency and effectiveness.

When an impact in your life moves from healthy to debilitating, then sharpen the saw. Instead of trying to plow through the resistance, take an hour to decompress so you can come back at it with renewed zest.

You decide what you do to sharpen your saw. As you successfully take action on honing the unique blade of your life, you show yourself that you’re an autonomous being. In addition, you increase your competency. As you increase your competency, you increase the influence you can have on the world outside of yourself.
