Video Report-The Pale Pitcher Plant
1. What is the scientific name of the pitcher plant presented in the video and how many
species are currently known for this plant. (2pts)
-Sarracenia alata is the scientific name of the pitcher plant 9pale pitcher plant)
presented in the video. There are around eight or nine species currently known
for this plant.
2. Describe how the pitcher plant successfully trap insects for food. (5 pts)
- The pitcher plant traps insects for food through its modified leaves that are
vertically elongated , cylindrical pitcher with a wide hole on top. It lures insects
using nectar that has a pleasing smell to insects. On the pitcher plant lip, it is
coated with narcotics to make the insects drowsy which would eventually make
them fall inside. Down to the slippery, waxy upper sides to slide deeper down to
the middle part where downward hair structures are on the walls of the pitcher
preventing insects from crawling upwards, and will make the insects go deeper to
the stomach of the plant that contains fluids with approximately 800 species of
microorganisms living with enzymes to digest the insects where the plant will
absorb the nutrients.
3. Why is the pitcher plant considered as a modified leaf. (5 pts)
- The pitcher plant is considered a modified leaf because of its unusual
characteristics. They adapt due to their nutrient-poor environment. The plant have
a circular shape similar to pitcher where its name pitcher plant was derived, but
when they are in a nutrient-rich environment, they would be flat like just like
normal leaves.
- The leaf lamina is modified into a pitcher-like structure to trap flying or crawling
insects .
4. Relate the pitcher plants carnivorous nature with the kind of environment where it
grows. (5 pts)
- The pitcher plant’s carnivorous nature is due to the kind of environment where the
plants grow. They grow in Nutrient-poor soil that has high humidity and lacks
nitrogen and phosphorus which is not enough for them to thrive.
5. Briefly describe the external anatomy of the pitcher plants seen in the video. (3 pts)
- The external anatomy of the pitcher plant (Sarracenia alata) is seen in the video
are: operculum (the lid that covers the opening of the plant), peristome (the rim-
like lip of the plant opening), mouth (the entrance of the trapped insects), pitcher
tube (the part that contains the traps/ the body), nectar glands ( the part that
