Chapter 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING Introduction Smart shaming is a phenomenon by-product of anti-intellectualism. In 2015, Sison noted that in history, anti-intellectualism has been used as a tool by extreme dictatorships to establish themselves and to paint educated people as a threat because they question social norms and question established opinions. This is rooted in why it is expected that people from the privileged and elite sectors embody power and opinions that are always validated due to their looked-up social status. According to Dan (2017), this anti-intellectualism is embedded in the culture of the Filipino people as a result of being colonized by several countries for hundreds of years, specifically by Americans and Spaniards. Back in the colonization era, the invader's role in Philippine society was to take control and limit Filipino citizens' ability to think skeptically. Filipinos, being hospitable more than enough, were fooled that they were being saved instead of getting stabbed. And when it is too late, they then realize how foolish they were to let someone else take control of their

territory—and this is when the insecurities kick in, hatred builds up, and rage for the powerful enough to manipulate others manifests. In their study entitled "The Ironic Filipino Humor: Culture of Anti- Intellectualism on the Self-Esteem of Grade 12 Academic Achievers at Lyceum of Alabang, SY 2022-2023," Secapuri et al. stated that the insecurities of the Filipino people had exacerbated over time, giving birth to numerous social issues such as crab-mentality, machismo, and therefore, anti-intellectualism. Rage for those who culture-washed our country concludes explanations as to why, in the modern day, we can often witness that intelligence is being taken as a form of entitlement by Filipinos. Phrases such as "Ikaw na magaling!" "Wow, English!" and "Pabibo!" are just some of the takes you have probably heard already coming from a Filipino youth. These phrases collectively aim to shame individuals expressing traits of intellectualism, whether they relate to profound insights or intelligent discourse on topics such as politics, philosophy, and current issues (Biana, 2019). Young people, particularly in-school youth, often engage with the instances involving this matter. Smart shaming predominantly transpires within educational institutions, notably in schools and classrooms, resulting in victims experiencing fear and shyness when expressing their thoughts and ideas

The purpose of the study is to know the smart shaming phenomenon and its influence on the students, how they deal with the situation, and the effect of it on their lives. This topic aims to inform the mass public about the possible outcome of smart shaming to its victim inside the room. Moreover, the researcher wants to come up with a better idea that will suggest to the institution. Theoretical Framework The following theories are used to assist the study in a declaration to achieve and strengthen the topic of researchers. As a student’s guide, the researchers began presenting several concepts by experts in alignment with the Smart Shaming Phenomenon. The researchers present two theories; constructivism theory by Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, and Jerome Bruner; another one is multiple intelligence by Howard Gardner. Constructivism Theory According to Jean Piaget (1971), constructivism enables an individual to refine his or her knowledge through the systematic organization, description, and adaptation of experiences. In doing so, learners actively reorganize knowledge in highly personalized ways, basing fluid intellectual configurations on existing information and formal instructional experiences. Furthermore, constructivism states that

learners actively construct knowledge through their interactions with their environment, including social, cultural, and environmental aspects. This approach sees learning as an active process in which students process their experiences, rather than passively acquiring knowledge. Vygotsky's social constructivism emphasizes the importance of social interactions and cultural norms in shaping learning and cognitive development. Peer interactions and social perspectives are believed to have a significant impact on learning. In smart shaming, children may be influenced by social situations, especially classmates' perceptions of their academic performance. If children believe that demonstrating their intellectual talents or doing well in school will make them look bad, they may absorb these negative social messages. As a result, they may start to behave differently. Belittle their intelligence or intentionally underperform their classmates' expectations. This concept highlights how social interactions, such as smart shaming, are relevant to research because they can have a significant impact on student's attitudes and learning patterns It means that children who grow up in an environment that values academic ability may develop study habits that intentionally avoid drawing attention to their intellectual abilities. It can affect their academic performance and

This theory states that every individual possesses different intelligence and ability. In the definition of the theory, all individuals can learn the world through language, mathematical analysis, spatial representation, musical thinking, use of the body to solve or innovate things, understanding of other people, and understanding of themselves. People differ in the capability of the given intelligence that is combined to perform distinct tasks. The multiple intelligences theory is connected to the study because it states the idea that each individual is smart in different ways. The only problem is that most people give general conclusions to intelligences in just a linguistic or mathematical approach, which only provides room for smart shaming. In addition, smart shaming takes place due to the lack of understanding, and individuals only focus on the intellectual capability of each human in the field of academics. Conceptual Framework The paradigm of the study shown in Figure 1. illustrates the conceptual framework of the study. This study aims to determine Smart Shaming and its influence to the Senior High Student of Nagpayong High School.
