A striking 95 billion pesos project that will revive a dead river is planning to take off. yes this is the pasig
river expressway or PAREX. a venture that will link the eastern and western parts of metro manila making
traveling easier than ever before. after all this drive is expected to cut travel time between manila to
resolve from 70 minutes to just a remarkable 15 minutes. in addition, it will remove the pollution of the
pasig river and bring it back to its former glory. although reviving this river seems unbelievable at first,
after all it has sustained decades of debris and garbage but san miguel corporation president ramon ang
plans to make this possible. the parex was introduced as a solution within a solution as it was hoped to
see life in the pasig river along with a 19 kilometer long expressway that will help decongest metro
manila.
this expressway is a proposed elevated toll road traversing the entirety of the pasig river. the elevated
expressway will have six lanes and will be 19.4 kilometers long. it will span from radial road 10 in manila
and end at a connection to the circumferential road 6. once the road is finished the parex will be made
up of three segments. 5.74 kilometers from radial road to plaza azul 2.70 kilometers from plaza azul to
san juan river via skyway stage 7.3 kilometers from san juan river to c5 intersection and finally 6.30
kilometers from c5 to c6 intersection
the freeway will ideally reduce travel time from r10 to c6 to just 15 minutes and will serve as a direct
route from the east to west of metro manila and vice versa. in addition the tollway will provide
alternative access points to business districts such as makati ortigas and Bonifacio global city.
according to the toll regulatory board the development of the elevated expressway will take around
three years to be completed, as to who will be on point for the proposed freeway. the parex will be a
joint project agreement between the Philippine national construction corporation and the san miguel
holdings corporation. when will construction begin? well the members of the toll regulatory board have
already approved of it in principle however the building of this megastructure is yet to officially start.
once achieved it will greatly benefit motorists that need to travel between rizal and manila or anywhere
else in Luzon for that matter, given how parex is intended to connect to other expressway projects such
as skyway stage 3. while there's no word so far on how this new infrastructure will affect the stream
system, san miguel chief ramon eng is optimistic. according to him, once these plans are complete the
pandemic would have been far behind. he added that the attempt on this project might be the most
challenging yet the most fulfilling.
several projects along the pasig river have been enacted throughout the past few years the commuter
ferry was brought back in february of this year giving folks an alternative means of transport. the pasig
river rehabilitation commission which spearheaded the still-ongoing pasig river rehabilitation master
plan was abolished by president Rodrigo duterte back in november 2019 with the range transferred to
the manila bay task force.
anyway what can you say about the pacific river expressway is it the answer to bringing back the
health and prosperity of river and a much needed relief to congestion or is it a death sentence for the
estuary?
