Maria Concepcion F. Reña BSENT 2- 1 Politics, Governance, and Citizenship Marlon P. Tuiza, LPT, DPA Activity No. Directions. Answer the following essay questions using the required number of sentences. 1. What is Political Science and discuss its importance in understanding the present condition of the Philippine government. (7-8 sentences) Political Science is the study of human behavior which relates largely to the government as well as the state’s operations. It is the study of the politics and government systems, political behavior, and how power is distributed within the society. It focuses on theories, practices and institutions that make political processes and decision making. Understanding the current condition of the Philippine government is important mainly because it helps everyone become knowledgeable of how the government works. It is also important because this will recognize if there are political issues and social issues, this will guide individuals to understand the root cause of issues and develop opinions on how to address them. Filipinos mostly believe in flower words and promises of politicians, that’s why it is very important to understand and do some research and be knowledgeable about the Philippine government before voting. This will guide every Filipino to be more open-minded and not be “uto-uto” or fool in English, in picking the right leader. By equipping individuals with skills and knowledge the individuals are empowered to actively engage in political debates, make informed decisions, and contribute to a more democratic society as responsible citizens. 2. Given the four primary elements of the state, can we consider Sealand as such? Justify your answer. (10-12 sentences) Sealand, sometimes known as the Principality of Sealand, is a self-proclaimed micronation based on an abandoned World War II sea fort in the North Sea, Roy Bates established the fort in 1967, claiming it as his own sovereign nation. Based on the video that I watched, there is only one full time population, there is only one permanent resident and others are occasional residents. The Sealand is just a rough tower built as an anti-aircraft platform during World War II, then after war it became as a pirate radio broadcasting and later declared as an independent state, this state has a landmass that is the size of two tennis courts. The Principality of Sealand has a self-declared monarchy; they have hereditary royal rulers that are managed by the Bates family, Roy Bates as Prince Roy and his wife as Princess Joan. They establish their own laws and legal system, and he design their own flag, make their own currency, passport, and own immigration stamp even if Roy Bates did all of it, international countries did not recognize it as a state.

State is a political and legal institution that has sovereign power over a certain territory, people, and has a government with the ability to establish and execute laws, maintain order, and provide public services. There are four elements of state: the people, territory, government, and sovereignty and given the primary elements of state, for me Sealand can’t be considered as a state terms of people, Sealand has only one permanent resident even though it does not require the number of people in a state whose population is not enough to sustain, develop, and share certain characteristics and interests such as common language, religion and a common tradition that will unite them. In territory, they only have two tennis court-size landmass and there is no territorial water, they are located in international waters and it was never recognized as sovereign territory by any countries government they have their own legal system, have a monarchy and a simple constitution and, in sovereignty, it is important to have a wide recognition by the international community so it happens that sealand has a lack of recognition internationally even if it is a UN country. In conclusion, the Principality of Sealand based on the four elements of state did not meet all the criteria that is needed to be a state in government, they met it 100% but in people, territory, and sovereignty they didn’t meet it so, Sealand can’t recognize it as a state. 3. Can we consider that “The Legislative” is an institution? Yes or No? Why? (7- 8 sentences) The Legislative is one of the three branches of government in democratic countries, that is responsible for making, amending, and repealing laws Legislative Branch is called Congress that consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate who had been elected to represent the people, they are responsible to give the rights and duties of the citizens. They have to ensure that the laws that are passed are fair and reflect the will of the people and they make sure that the separation of powers and provides a system of checks and balances to prevent the concentration of power. While, the institution is an established organization that has a particular function In our society, it is a structure that can influence the people’s behavior and norms within society that can shape an individual. Yes, we can consider the Legislative as an institution because of its qualities to make and amend laws, and to represent and listen to people. Its ability to shape public policy, ensure accountability, and represent citizens’ interests is important to be recognized as an institution legislative branch promotes transparency, inclusiveness, and the rule of law, making it an essential component of a democratic government. Through these qualities, it has been proven that the Legislative Branch is an institution and it aims to give what is right to the citizens and to have the right judgment for everyone.

officials. If the law or action is determined to be in violation of the Constitution the courts may declare it null and invalid. Here In the Philippines the checks and balances system is not well practiced because of its weak institution, political dynasties, and corruption. In order to address it, we should have to strengthen the institution, combat corruption and have the transparency and accountability of each member of the government. This can help the leaders to be responsible for their actions and to prevent the misuse of power. And if they practice it, the Philippines can achieve sustainable development and provide a high quality of life for every Filipino. 3. How do military, church, and media shape the political landscape of the Philippines? Justify your answer. (10-15 sentences) The political landscape describes the entire composition and arrangement of political parties, beliefs, and power dynamics within a region or country. It involves party connections, voter demographics, policy concerns, and election results. The military, church, and media have a role in shaping the political landscape of the Philippines. The job of the military is to protect the Filipino people and the Philippines from the threats of other countries. This can influence the people to choose their candidates that are from the military because people think that the country has been protected from the intruder. The separation of church and politics is one of the prohibiting laws but still church can affect the shaping of the political landscape. Churches provide moral guidance that’s why people believe in what the church says so it can affect the political beliefs. Last election year 2022, I would say that the church has a big influence on the political beliefs of the Filipino. Iglesias Ni Cristo(INC) is an example, they endorse the tandem of Marcos and Duterte in their 3 million members in the Philippines because they believe in what their leaders say, so it resulted in the win of this tandem. Media is the fastest way to communicate and spread information. Not all the information that we read and watch is true, sometimes it’s fake news, we should always do some research before we believe. It can shape how people view political problems and the officials. The way of how news is delivered can influence public perception and possibly shift decisions. This is the platform that can influence the public opinion and lead to change their preference and beliefs In government. Through these three institutions, the military, church, and media, I can say that the interconnected influence on governance, public opinion, and policymaking in the Philippines, which impacts political dynamics and shaping democratic processes. Their responsibilities reflect the complicated interplay of several sectors in the Philippine political landscape.
