Politics, Governance and Citizenship (GEED 20023) FINALS

In my opinion, elections still matter despite the political system being controlled by political clans. It's no secret political clans either buy or manipulate votes for their own purpose, having been stained with lack of transparency and unfairness especially against political leaders that have little to no powerful connections. Despite that, I believe that holding elections is an act that proves we are a democratic country. Without it, we are nothing more than a dictatorship, which will make the situation of the country even worse than it already is. National and local leaders must have the characteristics of someone that is ready to listen to the voices of the people, always ready to help and does everything in their power to solve the problems that face the common Filipino. They must be strict, but not to the point of cruelty. Just look at the case of Marcos: state-sanctioned abuses and violence against citizens is and will never be the answer. They must also be fair, transparent, and just; someone who holds accountability for their actions. We need leaders that are wholly defined by the term "public servant": genuinely committed to serving the people, and not just someone who wishes to pursue a spot in politics for their personal gain, or rose to ranks because of immense popularity and financial status. We don’t need more politicians that only talk but don’t do their part in solving the issues of the country. On the flip side, in order for an election to be successful in choosing good leaders, we must do our part and research about the candidates thoroughly so that our votes will not go to waste. Hopefully when the coming elections finally come, we can choose the rightful people that can lead the Philippines into a better and brighter future.
