BSA Politics, Governance and Citizenship (GEED 20023)

Weeks 5-

PHILIPPINE POLITICS: STATE, PATRONAGE, AND LOCAL ELITES

Activity:

Make a 250-word (citations not included) reflection paper on what are the peculiarities of Philippine politics with other Southeast Asian countries.

Some peculiarities of Philippine politics with other Southeast Asian countries include our politics mostly being influenced by colonizing nations before the country gained independence in 1946. As such, politics have Western influences due to America's colonization. One thing that makes Philippine politics stick out from other Southeast Asian countries is the significance of local governments such as municipalities and barangays, the former being the smallest unit of Philippine government. Because the Philippines is an archipelago, we are highly dependent on them. As a result, there is more capacity in the community for government policies, plans, programs, initiatives, and activities in which the people of their specific barangays can express their ideas and issues, and authorities can accommodate these according to their unique needs. As a result, local concerns can be resolved more quickly and easily. No other country has this kind of politics, at least none that I know of. It’s a unique kind of Philippine politics that mustn’t be taken for granted due to its importance in smaller and tight-knit communities, since they are also big factors for cases to be given solutions without the need to file one under local courts.
