Provide your analysis of each caricature presented in Alfred MCCOYS Philippine cartoons; Political Caricature of the American Era (1900- 1941)

1st caricature: A public post is not a hereditary crown - This speaks about politics. The crown symbolizes the sovereignty that the Filipinos should have. The Cartoon shows the recent anomaly of gaining the independence of the Filipinos in the Spanish and the American people in Paris that the people will pass its colony to America in exchange for money that the Filipinos want to fight and prevent. It could also be connected to the Political dynasty where some authority and power is passed to its relative to maintain the power where it wants to be stopped.

**2nd caricature: War, against the Speculators

  • I** t was aimed as a commentary of the manila police at that period. This shows how law enforcement officials become unfair, preferring to punish the poor who try to commit crimes because of poverty than the high-ranking people who do more harm to the country. There is a sad reality that we can learn from this caricature is that so-called favoritism where they are more favorable to rich people who can buy and do anything.

3rd caricature: Death Cars

  • Basically, the third caricature symbolizes the new transportation system brought by the Americans where here we can see that rules and laws are lacking when it comes to automobiles

4th caricature: Flaming youth - It shows two views and reactions of different people regarding what is forbidden in the theater. The other one is horrified because I think it is the Americans who want to be liberated while the other one is amused because they show the conservativeness that Filipinos have and as Christians. It also shows that Filipinos have a special respect for others which also shows the good manners taught to the youth.
