2 Chapter 1: Introduction Background of the study ( Use T.I.O. Approach or Inverted Pyramid Approach ) Sleep, according to the dictionary of Merriam Webster is an essential part of human being's lives for restoration and recovery of their body and mental function. One's identified as sleeping when its absence of consciousness is seen through its typical body posture which is lying down with eyes closed. This is also where dreams and changes in brain activity and physiological functioning occurs. Sleep deprivation is the lack of sleep or when one fails to attain enough sleep that they need, it can happen to people through many reasons such as lifestyle, environmental factor, and even due to underlying health issues that are left unattended or ignored. Failing to get enough sleep or being sleep deprived for a long period of time can leave a major impact on the functioning of your body at daytime such as poor concentration, decrease in reaction times, and quick changes in mood. Academic performance is the basis or tool that teachers uses in school when it comes to measuring the student's achievement or level of capability and intelligence in academic, it mostly comes out or observed in grade point average or GPA that is mostly measured using scale, scores attained from an exam, rate of high school graduates, and entrance exam in college. The research study "Consequences of inadequate sleep during the college years: Sleep deprivation, grade point average, and college graduation" that was conducted by Wei-Lin Chen and Jen-Hao Chen in United States of America (USA), year 2019, suggests that sleep deprivation is associated with lower GPA using the obtained results from the random-effects and fixed-effects models. Sleep deprivation has a negative impact on brain and cognitive processes, which in turn hinder learning and memory (Hershner and Chervin, 2014, as citated by Wei-Lin Chen and Jen- Hao Chen, 2019). According to the neuropsychological perspective, with that, students who experiences sleep deprivation are more likely to learn their materials less effectively, which can lead to the lowering of their grade point average (GPA) (Wei-Lin Chen and Jen-Hao Chen, 2019).
average (GPA) than those students who gets enough sleep on daily basis with the use of collected data that are presented in the stated studies. Statement of the Problem The researchers in this research are aiming to know the total number of Grade 12 Students in SEAITT-MARILAO who are experiencing sleep deprivation and its impact on their academic performance through these specific questions:
- What are the factors that causes sleep deprivation to Students? a. Amount of school works b. Lack of time management d. Too much exposure on social media
- How many Grade 12 Students per strand are experiencing sleep deprivation?
- What are the impact of sleep deprivation on Grade 12 Students academic performances in SEAITT- MARILAO? Hypothesis The researchers assumed the following hypothesis as the most probable finding of this study Null Hypothesis - There is no significant relationship between sleep deprivation and the academic performance of the senior high school students in the Southeast Asia Institute of Trade and Technology – Marilao. Alternative hypothesis - There is a significant relationship between sleep deprivation and the academic performance of the senior high school students in the Southeast Asia Institute of Trade and Technology – Marilao. Conceptual Framework IV DV SS Sleep Deprivation Academic Performance
FIGURE 1: The figure presents two variables that researchers would want to study, namely sleep deprivation and academic performance. The researcher aims to find out if there is a significant relationship between the variables by collecting data through survey-questionnaires that contains a minimum of five and maximum of ten questions which will be given to the 30 selected respondents from grade 12 learners in South East-Asia Institute of Trade and Technology – Marilao.
Significance of the Study The research study “The Impact of Sleep Deprivation to Grade 12 Students’ Academic Performance in SEAITT-MARILAO” focuses on students of the South East Asia Institute experiencing Sleep Deprivation. The goal of this study is to find out how many people experience it and how much the effect of sleep deprivation is on students, as well as how they can be helped to avoid experiencing it. The researchers aims to expect that this study will be useful and can give contributions to some individuals; as follows: Students- This study will open the eyes of all students who are experiencing sleep deprivation. It can reduce the negative sleep of students at the wrong time so that they know the effect of sleep deprivation. Teachers- This study will help teachers understand the issue of sleep deprivation in their students, whether they are going through something or not. Accordingly, teachers, as second parents of students, will know how to help their students at the right time of sleep. Parents- This study can help better support their child's academic journey so that parents can also be aware if their children are one of those who experience sleep deprivation. Researchers- This research can expand the knowledge and experiences of individuals experiencing sleep deprivation. It will also be useful to other researchers who want to have more of this study. To know how much sleep deprivation affects students and to help them know how to solve this situation.
