those which are derived from factual reality Examples:

  • Woman
  • Laborer
  • Lawyer

b. ARBITRARY CONCEPTS

are those which are derived from the imagination as mental fabrication or fiction. Examples:

  • Mermaid
  • Superman
  • Darna

c. IMMEDIATE CONCEPTS

are those which are derived from direct perception of things. Examples:

  • Myself

  • This table

  • Doctor

d. MEDIATE CONCEPTS

are those which are derived from other concepts. Examples:

  • God
  • Devil
  • Supreme Creator

PROPERTIES OF CONCEPTS

1 (or connotation) is the sum total of the essential characteristics comprehended and grasped by the mind in an idea. Example:

  • The idea man represents an essence that is existing, subsistent, bodily, living, sentient, and rational

COMPREHENSION VS.

EXTENSION

❖ The comprehension and extension of one and the same concept vary inversely; the greater the comprehension, the lesser the extension, and vice versa.

TERMS

★ derived from the Latin word terminum, which literally means “boundary”. ★ It is the last element into which proposition may be resolved, namely, the person's spoken and written words.
