GLOBAL DIVIDE: THE NORTH AND SOUTH

GLOBAL DIVIDES

● The term global divide connotes disparities in income and living conditions between the advanced and developing states. ● It is not purely of a geographical division but rather focused on socio economic and political affiliations and status.

DIVISION OF NORTH & SOUTH

The north and south divide (or rich-poor divide) is the socio economic and political division that exists between the wealthy developed countries, known collectively as “the North,” and the poorer developing countries (least developed countries), or “the South.”

DIVISION OF NORTH & SOUTH

As nations become economically developed, they may become part of the “North,” regardless of geographical location, while any other nations which do not qualify for “developed” status are in effect deemed to be part of the “South.”

GLOBAL NORTH

It refers to developed societies which are characterized by established wealth, technological advancements, political stability, zero population growth and dominance of world trade and politics. Global North consists of countries that experienced advancements in modern Technologies and have access to all types of services.

GLOBAL SOUTH

It refers to the developing countries which represent mainly agrarian economies in Africa, India, Latin America, and others that are not as politically stable economically sound and Global South includes less developed countries which are characterized by low level of economic development, large inequalities in living standards and low life expectancy.

THE HISTORY BEHIND

● The Global North-South Divide is an imaginary line that divides the wealthy developed countries and the poor developing countries. It is also known as “Rich-Poor Divide”. ● The north-south divide is more metaphorical than it is geographical. Meaning, although most nations comprising the “Global North” are in fact located in the Northern Hemisphere, the divide is not primarily defined by geography or location. ● As nations become economically developed, they may become part of the “Global North”, regardless of geographical location, while any other

  1. Formerly communist nations that aren’t exactly impoverished but also aren’t wealthy.

  1. The Third World is a non-aligned region that is characterized by widespread poverty and undeveloped areas

THE THIRD WORLD

o Countries in Asia o Latin America o Afghanistan

This categorization was later abandoned after the Second World countries joined the First World countries.

New criteria was established to categorize countries which were named the North-South Divide where First World countries were known as the North while Third World countries comprised the South.

REASONS WHY THE NORTH AND SOUTH DIVIDED

WHAT IS GLOBAL DIVIDE?

● The concept of a gap between the Global North and the Global South in terms of development and wealth. ● The global digital divide describes global disparities, primarily between developed and developing countries, in regards to access to computing and information resources such as the internet and the opportunities derived from such access.

REASONS

  1. The two sides of the debate over slavery were divided between the two main sections of the united states; the north and south.
  2. Many northerners viewed slavery as evil and wrong and some were involved in the abolitionist movement.
  3. The north did not obey fugitive slave laws because they said they were cruel and inhumane.

Development is the process of change that affects people’s lives, exploring how the standard of living and quality of life of the global population varies around the world.

o Country’s vulnerability to natural hazards

o How countries are governed and its international relationship between countries o Conflict within and between countries

SOCIO-ECONOMIC FACTORS

o Different levels of health and education o International Trading o Debts
