EXPLORE:
In the earliest times, music was a form of oral tradition. It was passed on from one performer to another by repletion and memory. During the 5th century a form of notation using signs called <neumes= had evolved as a means of writing down church music or plainsong. These showed the rise and fall of the notes of a song without giving an exact idea of pitch or rhythm. Music is composed of different notes and rest, which when combined, create melody. Recognizing notes and rest will let you read, understand, and appreciate music. A note is a written symbol used to indicate the duration and pitch of a tone by its shape and position on the staff. A rest on the other hand is a rhythmic silence music. Music is made up of several elements. These include rhythm, melody, timbre, texture, form, tempo, dynamics, and harmony. Of all these elements, rhythm is the most important as it is the life and heartbeat of music.
In this lesson, we will learn the importance of being able to identify the meter of the songs or music and how does is being able to read and write rhythm, notes and rest help you as musicians.
LESSON PROPER:
Lesson Title: Notes and Rests
As the years passed a system of writing down notes was developed by musicians. This was called Musical Notation which represents the pitch and duration of a musical sound. Before we learn how to read and write words, we must first know how to read the letters or the alphabet. It also goes the same in music. For us to be able to read notes, we must first be familiar with music symbols. Musical signs and symbols are used in the notation of music scores and compositions. When music is played correctly, people appreciate it well. The following are some examples of musical symbols.
A NOTE is a symbol for sound, while REST is a symbol for silence. A note has different parts.
There are different kinds of notes and rests. Each kind has its own specific duration. Duration refers to the length of time a note or rest lasts.
