(Reflection)

In this lesson, we will learn what is leadership and how it is different from

management.

Leadership

What is the difference between a manager and a leader?

Leadership is differentiated from management based on the relationship

between the manager and his employees. While management is transactional,

where the manager gives instructions or directions to employees; leadership

encourages employees to focus on goals, anticipate challenges and work

together to address difficulties. In leadership, the employees are being engaged

in a democratic way because their relationship is defined by cooperation,

mutual trust and esteem.

So, Carlyle analyzed the behavior of renowned men especially military leaders to come up with this theory. Among the great men he considered as great leaders are Napoleon, Oliver Cromwell and Martin Luther.

In Trait Theory, it is believed that leaders possess specific attributes that made them great leaders. These traits become the bases in choosing individuals to be considered a leader.

Robert Blake and Jane Mouton developed the Leadership Grid which defines leadership as a balance between the concern for people and concern for tasks which resulted to five leadership styles: Authoritarian Leaders, Country Club Leaders, Impoverished Leaders, Team Leaders, and Middle of the Road Leaders.

Transformational Leadership Theory believes that it is the responsibility of the leader to transform followers as a product of a two-way interaction between leader and follower.

The Participative Leadership Theory gives focus on the role of both leader and participants (subordinates, peers and other stakeholders) in decision making.
