IVK Case 5 Reflection

Chapter 14:

  1. Should acquisition of infrastructure replacement services be an arms-length transaction or a close partnership transaction? A close partnership transaction is preferable to an arms-length transaction for IVK. The chapter goes into detail on earlier ServoLith experience, which does not sound like it would be a suitable fit for IVK. Essentially, IVK wanted the best and chose ServoLith as a result. Because ServoLith hadn’t given priority to IVK, this bold move put IVK in a terrible spot, and complications occurred as a result of the relationship. IVK requires the services of a sufficiently sized service provider capable of prioritizing IVK and delivering results. IVK was working with a service firm that was much out of their league, and while their objectives of finding the best were good, the results were less than ideal, necessitating a close partnership.

  2. Which vendor, contract structure, and service delivery model should IVK choose? VerxaWeb, in my opinion, is the greatest option because they can provide excellent service. Because of their more responsive nature, they would be a lot better match for IVK.

  3. How important is “control” to a company like IVK when outsourcing IT? How should control be maintained?

This actually depends on the nature of the business. For instance, business with delicate information like banks and hospitals, need very tight control over the information that is accessed by outside consultants for security purposes of the company itself and for its customers. Now, for a company like IVK, that does have such sensitive informations as well as personal customer data, it is imperative for them to set up strict boundaries with regards to this sensitive information. If any information is needed from IVK them IVK’s personnel should monitor and record it. 4. How should IVK hire to support contract management? Will very, very good technical employees be needed in a future characterized by high levels of IT outsourcing? To ensure that any future outsourcing IVK may require is done safely for IVK and IVK's clients, it will only be logical to hire better IT assistance. IVK will profit immensely from the insurance that comes with assigning strong IT staff to these outsourcing companies. This is a proactive approach to business management in the future.

Chapter 16:

  1. Can the IT trend toward ever more maintenance be stemmed? Moore’s law states, that technology “ridiculously accelerating power and plummeting costs” are driving tech innovations. These new trends also require IT maintenance because what was once a viable IT service quickly becomes outdated. But despite these trends, however, IT is becoming less tangible and more reliant on cloud computing. Since cloud-based technologies are intangible, they require less maintenance.
