ABSTRACT

Morning in the bario of Nagrebcan, there was a boy named Baldo who went out

of their house to play with their dogs, suddenly his younger brother ambo joined

him, Ambo wanted to play with one specific dog it's the black spotted puppies,

but Baldo claimed that black spotted it as his own. So he didn't allow Ambo to

play with that puppy, as a result of argument and fight, while they were fighting,

Ambo's hand got bit by the puppy, his hand started bleeding,

Hearing the argument of Baldo and Ambo, the boy's father, Tang Ciaco looked

out the window, he saw Ambo's bleeding, he rashly go out of the house, soon

after he checked his son, he grabbed a piece of firewood, and started beating the

puppy who soon died, after that, he turned his anger to the boys and beat them

as well.

The mother of the boys, Nana Elang, went out also to rescue her sons to their

father, afterwards, Nana Elang doing household chores, with Tang Ciaco getting

ready to go for his work, and the two boys finding the dead puppy and giving it a

burial.

Thesis Statement: In “The Morning in Nagrebcan,” Manuel E. Arguila uses

the symbolism of the morning serves as a time of renewal, to covey themes

embodying the idea that every new day presents a fresh establishing and a risk

for rejuvenation.

Introduction: Manuel E. Arguilla’s “Morning in Nagrebcan” tells a story of a

family with a dog and its young puppies living in Katanyaghan Hills. The family is

comprised of Tang Ciaco (father), Nana Elang (mother) and the two sons, Ambo

and Baldo. It is dawn in Nagrebcan, Nana Elang consistently doing her obligation

as a housewife while Ambo and Baldo were in a fierce fight and the root cause

was the foolish act of Ambo eating the whole banana without peeling the skin of

it. Baldo insist Ambo not to eat the banana with peelings and eventually, the

rivalry between the two brothers arose.

Analysis of plot: "A Morning in Nagrebcan" by Manuel E. Arguilla is a short

story set in a rural village in the Philippines. The plot revolves around a young

boy named Baldo who accompanies his older brother, Ambo, to fetch the dead

puppy. Baldo observes the world around him with a mix of innocence and

curiosity. The plot explores themes of family, tradition, and the contrast between

rural and urban life.

Character of analysis: Baldo is a dynamic character because, despite the

death of his beloved puppy due to his brother Ambo, he had a transformation

along the narrative. As the oldest son, he is a blameworthy child, an animal lover,

and a decent son who obeys his mother. He stands for purity and obedience.

Ambo, his younger brother, shares Baldo's traits, however, unlike his violent

sibling when he attacked Baldo, he is a calm individual who adores animals.

Being an odd child, Ambo ate the banana without peeling it. Ambo and Baldo's

mother, Nana Elang, was a devoted wife and mother to her husband as well as

her kids. She represents the sacrifices made by women for their families and

their vulnerability in traditional Filipino society. The difficulties faced by women in

rural communities are emphasized by her character. Tang Ciako, the father of

Ambo and Baldo, is an irresponsible father who abuses his wife and sons, lacks

empathy, is impatient and hot-headed, is an alcoholic, and is violent in both

immerse readers in the rural Philippine village of Nagrebcan, enhancing the

atmosphere and adding depth to the narrative.

Contextual Analysis: Morning In Nagrebcan by Manuel E. Arguilla offers an

insightful exploration of life in rural Philippine village, Particularly focusing on the

daily activities and relationships among its inhabitants, especially the children.

Through detailed descriptions and subtle language, Arguilla captures the

essence of rural existence, addressing themes like innocence, family ties, and

the challenges of poverty. Nagrebcan serves as a microcosm reflecting broader

issues in rural Philippine society, Including economic difficulties and cultural

traditions.

Conclusion: This story tells about a remarkable day in the life of two brothers,

ten-year old, Baldo and Ambo one beautiful sunny day at a farm land in

Nagrebcan. Meanwhile, the younger one, Ambo, about seven years old woke up

and he also wanted to play with the puppy that his older brother Baldo was

playing, parent’s duties may be challenging, but they might discipline their

children with respect, we face many challenges every single day, but at the end

of the day, we will conquered them, every morning is a blessing, so do your day

productive and always put GOD in your centerpiece, to not lead you to a wrong

doings.

The lesson in this story is, control your anger, don’t let it control you, don’t act

rapidly, you’ll regret it later.
