Appearance Can Be Deceiving
“All that glitters is not gold”, an aphorism written by Shakespeare in his play The
Merchant of Venice. It means that something (or someone) appears to be good
or valuable does not mean that it (or one) truly is. The proverb “all that glitters is
not gold” expresses the idea that some things may not be as beneficial or as
valuable as it appears to be. This common phrase can refer to people or objects.
A girl I used to know in some stage of my life is the best example for this
proverb. She used to appear the good, clever, and polite girl. She really was so
calm featured that gives comfort and relief to anyone who is looking for a good
friend. She would give that attitude that you have found the right person. She has
always focused on her studies and did not let anyone distract her or drag her to a
wrong path… or that is what it looked like from out there.
After a while from knowing her, we became closer by time. I never let
anyone become that close to me, as people scare me, but I let her anyways. I
introduced her to my family and so did she. We spend most of the time together
and she was about to be my third sister. And when I finally let my guard down, I
was so stabbed in the back. She got involved in some impolite stuff, and when
her parents found out, she simply told them it was all me. Instead of admitting her
own fault, she preferred to (discredit) me, sell me out in that shameful way, and
lose me as a good loyal friend just to get away with punishment.
Finally, and thanks to her, I no longer believe in friendship, and it was so
proven to me that “all that glitters is not gold”. I wish I would have figured that
proverb out by a science experiment or some rusty metal, but it is what it is. I
really hope that people show their true metal to other people before it is too late.
And I really do hope that no one ever would have to experience that kind of hurt
and ugly truth ever again.
