Written Assignment Unit- 1. What is Peer Assessment and why do we use it at University of the People? Peer Assessment is giving commentaries on the work of the classmates based on the topic assigned. In fact, it is learning through engagement (Connely & Claudinin, 1990). It is used at the University of the People as it helps student apply what they are learning by assessing peers work either through the written assignments or discussion forums. Moreover, this also gives students different perspectives and ideas while allowing each other’s skills to be sharpened as they assess one another.

  1. What are the benefits of peer assessment? There are many benefits of peer assessment. Firstly, it improves the learning experience of each student by helping assess another students work. Secondly, it also encourages the students to take a much greater responsibility with assessment criteria and reflection of their own performance. And lastly, according to Race, Brown & Smith (2005), it helps students effectively internalize academic standards and assessment criteria.

  2. What are the challenges of giving peer assessment feedback in peer assessment? Some of the challenges of giving peer assessment feedback are the fear that some peers may not have graded you fairly or some being too generous in terms of grading.

  3. What are the challenges of receiving peer feedback in peer assessment? In terms of receiving peer feedback in peer assessment, one challenge can be that some peers might be too critical in terms of their approach. It is very essential to be accurate in

assessing. Being overly critical can affects others grade as well as the self-esteem. Therefore, it is important to look at the content in different perspectives and get into the writer’s mind in order to give perfect feedback.

  1. What strategies will you use to peer assess written assignments? How will you assess discussion assignments? The approach that I will use to assess written assignment is that, as mentioned above, I will ask myself questions like what he or she was thinking while writing the assignment, what was in their mind and so on, to enter the writer’s mind to give a fair grade. The same goes for the discussion assignment. Firstly, I will try to enter the mind of the writer and also plan to assess based on the knowledge I have on that particular topic.
