AE 222/02 Syllabus

SPRING 2021

Instructor: Aylin Vartanyan E-mail: vartanya@boun.edu Office Hours: by appointment via zoom or skype

Course Objective

We live in a time when memory has started to occupy a considerable space of the dominant public and private discourse. As suggested by Andreas Huyssen, today “we seem to suffer from hypertrophy of memory, not history” (Present Pasts, 3). The course starts with a discussion of some basic theoretical texts on memory. The themes of collective memory and post memory will be discussed through theoretical texts as well as the works of visual artists, poets, film directors working in the field. Students will be writing a response paper as a culminating work for this course. The conventions of how to write a response paper will be discussed in class.

Required Reading A reader will be made available for you at Günel Fotokopi near the bakery in Hisarüstü. For those who are off campus, a pdf version of the reader will be made available via the moodle system. It would be helpful to have access to a college dictionary and thesaurus such as The Oxford English Dictionary, merriam- webster/ or thesaurus/. Recommended website for Academic Writing: Purdue University Online Writing Lab owl.english.purdue/

Class Participation It is crucial that you come to class on time, with required texts and well prepared to offer thoughtful responses to the assigned reading.

As the format of the course is based on discussion and participation, it is essential that you attend class faithfully. In the case of absence, it is your responsibility to contact another student to catch up on what you missed in class.

Academic Honesty and Originality As a Bogaziçi University student, member of this class and the larger community of writers, you are expected to abide by the norms of academic honesty. Borrowing someone else's language and/or ideas without proper acknowledgement is academically dishonest and a form of plagiarism, which is an insult to the owner of the original work. Plagiarism can have serious academic consequences at Boğaziçi University. If you plagiarize in any class assignment or your final paper, you will automatically get an F from this course and your departmental advisor will be informed.

In class, we'll discuss how to acknowledge sources and how to avoid plagiarism.
